ScrapHappy January

Hello, hope you’ve all had a ScrappyHappy Christmas or seasonal celebration of your choice 🙂

Today’s the 15th of the month, the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host  ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps. And by the way, this is our third January ScrapHappy. Can you believe we’ve been at it so long?

You’ll remember (I hope!) that last time I decided I wasn’t happy with the way the scrappy quilt was coming along, and that I’d take out all the pale, pastel blocks for another quilt in due course. Well, of course, that left me with gaps, so I’d made another teal and another yellow/ orange block.

I had another look at what was left, and the paler version of the purple block was still pretty strong, so I pulled that out of the stack of pale blocks. So now I had two purples, two teals, two oranges and the black & white, brown, pink, blue, red and green. So I needed four more: another blue, green, red and pink. And here they are!

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link. Regular contributors will receive an email reminder three days before the event.

Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time. They may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at.

Love the teal one and the red one best 🙂

lovely blocks! Funnily enough, my favourite is the pink one so far but I’m not usually a pink gal.

Look how wonderful the new blocks are! Seems like you accomplished a lot since our last Scrap Happy Day. Will we be seeing a completed quilt top next time?

Probably not. I still have to make yards and yards of scrappy sashing strip using the till roll, so until that’s done I can’t get a layout done. There’ll be the block, then a dark blue border, then the scrappy strip between the blocks.

I’d forgotten about those till strips. This is going to be one fabulous quilt eventually!

It’s certainly going to be colourful! I wanted the dark blue frame for each block to have a bit of quiet space on what will otherwise be a riot of colour 🙂

Love the four new blocks! Looking forward to seeing how you set them together.

Those are all very fetching, Kate, the red and pink are my favorites though!

Pink and red my faves too…..maybe you’ll have to make “us all” a pink and red quilt

Not sure what happened there, half my comment disappeared!! I think I need to make an all blue que, didn’t realise how many blue scraps I had until I dragged them all out for the blue baby quilts. I’ll be posting a bit later, once my camera recharges and I can take photos.

I still have a huge quantity of dark and bright blues, so there may well be a blue scrappy quilt in my future. Hopefully someone I know will have a baby boy or grandson… Look forward to seeing your latest later one 🙂

  8. Though green is my favorite color, I’m in love with your pink block. The fabrics are beautiful. This looks like great fun.

  9. There isn’t one I don’t like though I will say orange is my least favorite color followed quickly by pink. I prefer peachy corals. For a quilt made with scraps this is going to be a stunner. Just keep working that magic. 😉 n

We can’t all like all the colours or life would be very dull 🙂 I don’t care much for yellow or brown or purple, but I still seem to have plenty of scraps in those colours.

      • It seems somehow when you put my least favorite colors together in a square, they turn out quite lovely and I would find them quite pleasant to look at. Color is a funny thing, it depends on the tone and value of it whether it is pleasing to the individual eye. You have NEVER made anything dull.

I wonder if it’s because colour for me has different attributes than for most people. A bit of mild synaesthesia makes colours have smells and sounds and they perform a much more important function in anything I make than shapes. That yellow block sounds like running water, and the pink one sounds like bells, for example. Having said that, I do enjoy the shapes too!

      • Well, that explains a lot! How lucky that colors sing to you in a way. It seems lucky to me anyway. I had to be taught about color.

      • katechiconi says:

Well, it certainly makes me avoid colours that make sad noises in my brain 🙂

Your blocks are so bright and fun with so many different fabrics. Please remind me how big they are. My own post this month uses larger pieces of fabric in a much calmer quilt-in-progress, but definitely made of scraps. Thanks for including me in this link-up.

    • katechiconi says:

They’re just over 12.5 inches square for a finished size of 12 inches. I think the smallest piece I’ve used is about 1 inch x .5 inch. I’ll hop over and take a look at your post shortly 🙂

  11. […] Maybe if I do even a little bit of this, I’ll have something to show on the 15th  of each month when Kate posts the Scrap Happy list.  You might enjoy looking at the progress of other Scrap Happy folks (here). […]

Love the new ones! Such heavy colors, they will shine!!!!

  14. […] Very nearly caught on the hop, thought tomorrow was the 15th. Anyway here I am joining in with Scrap Happy hosted by Kate. […]

  15. tialys says:

I love all those blocks Kate – the colours are so vibrant.

  16. Not sure how I missed this post! Beautiful vibrant colours 🙂

  17. I thought the red block was my favourite. Then, I thought maybe it was the blue one … or the pink one. OK, I love them all.
