Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.
This time, I’ve gone to my two largest scrap boxes: blue and teal/ aqua. I have about twice the amount of both as I do of other colours, so it was easy to dive in and find plenty of variety.
I really love both of these, especially the tiny little scraps of beloved fabrics I’ve had for many, many years. There are pieces that sing to me, that instantly take me back to past times and places, to brilliant memories and huge learning strides.
The quilt that comes into being from all these scrappy blocks is one I will want to keep for myself… forever.
ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address shown on the Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. You don’t have to worry about a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link.
Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time (they may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at):

See you again, same time next month!
Love the colors especially the blues. You put them together so well.
Thanks! I find the trick is to introduce touches of other colours and plenty of pattern and small pieces, that way it stays visually interesting.
I loved the bright peachy colors in it. They make it pop!
Don’t they! I started off with pieces that had much less of the peach, but it was just a bit blah… Contrast makes the colours sing 🙂
Love how the blocks sparkle! The resulting quilt is going to be beautiful.
It’s all that mixing up of pattern and colour. Such fun, and I’m going to treasure the quilt for the memories the fabrics hold.
I have a quilt my Mama & Granny pieced while listening to updates of Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic. It has bits of Granny’s “house dresses”, scraps of dresses they had made together for Mama & Granddaddy’s shirts. Mama treasured it all her life, & now, even though the precious components are not in my remembrance, I consider it priceless.
And rightly so, I’d say. You know, you really need to write down the story of the quilt, giving as much information as you know, and keep it together with photos of the quilt. One day, someone will look at it, and wonder about its story and the women who made it, and there’s the history, ready for them.
Wonderful colors, patterns & combinations. I’m a painter & your palettes are inspiring! I feel a great abstract coming on!
Glad to be of service in the creation of a piece of art!
Thank you, Kate, for the suggestion (above). Brilliant tip & I will do it.
Beautiful blocks! It helps when you start with lovely scraps. 🙂
Very true! Although you can disguise fragments of ‘uglies’ if you pick the section you use carefully, and sometimes it’s exactly what is needed in a field of rather boring elegant designs.
Lol! ‘Boring elegant designs!’ Sounds impossible but it’s true!
Tasteful can be a bit dull sometimes, can’t it…? Sometimes you need a little sprinkle of madness!
Just gorgeous work. As always.
Awwww….
I’m loving these blocks! No need to match up seams, or colours, or be very straight or accurate. And I can be as mad with the colours as I like!
And the result is so lovely!
🙂
[…] try to remember to link with other scrap projects, one (Oh Scrap!) is in the sidebar. The other, Scrap Happy deserves that you check it monthly on the […]
This quilt is going to be a riot of colours when it’s done – fantastic!
That’s the plan! I want the scraps to stand up for themselves and have meaning rather than just be leftovers and unloved.
That blue really zings. The whole quilt will have so much meaning for you. Sorry not one from me this month.
Not surprised to hear that – it looks as if you’ve been pretty busy this month! Glad you like the blocks, I’m rather pleased with them myself 🙂
Love the two blocks! And I know the feeling, looking at the fabrics and remember the quilts you´ve sewn 🙂
It’s like you can enjoy those projects all over again. All that happy feeling, but in one place 🙂
these are gorgeous Kate! how many of these scrap blocks do you have made already?
Seven so far (red, yellow, green, blue, teal, purple and pink), and still a few colours to get through 🙂
I love your blues! Scrap Happy is always inspiring to me, because I prefer scrap to planned; it reminds me of my grandmother’s and great Gran’s quilts, which are treasures. Using fabrics with memories is such a warm feeling. 😊
Yes, the blues really zing, don’t they? Lots more where that came from, I reckon there are a few more blocks in that box…
Oh those blues are beautiful!!
I have some really special tiny bits in that box, and it’s such fun to be able to use some of them up.
Great blues and teals…..and memories. Nothing from me, I was busy enjoying the beach and lots of varied and yummy eats.
Sounds perfect! There’ll always be another time for ScrapHappy…
You always post the prettiest items. I forgot to schedule my post although I had managed a few more hexi flowers. Time poor and rescheduling my life at present.
Oh, that’s so kind! Never mind about missing this month, there’s always next time, and hexie flowers sounds great.
