Lots of blue trellis made.
About 120 blue hexies still needed to complete the current pattern. I’m going to need more after that to ‘straighten’ the edges a bit, as I’ve decided to appliqué the outer hexie edge to a straight border.
I’ve begun joining more of it all up. The first four columns are complete, and I’ve started the fifth. It is extremely tendious, but has to be done or it’s nothing but pieces.
I’ve also decided to be easy on myself. Quilting will be straight diagonal lines, intersecting primarily through the trellis, but probably also through the centres of the diamonds. Thread will be something colourful, I think… Bright green, maybe?
What do you think? Green or orange or pink or turquoise…?
That is coming along nicely! I think bright green would be an awesome choice for the thread!
It was my first thought and currently my first choice!
I really am liking it. I think something really bright would be just perfect
I’m thinking a bright grass green. Although, now I think of it, if I can get a variegated thread that includes all the colours I suggested, that’d be perfect.
YES!!! I like it!
This is going to be gorgeous and look at all those hexies you’ve put to good use.
… and all that scrap I’ve gobbled up!
It’s looking marvellous. So eye-catching.
It’s even nicer in real life. Once I get it off the design wall and into proper daylight, I hope I’ll be able to capture all the colours.
I was just going to ask about the quilty-thread colour. I think it would be fab if it were bright and obvious, like – is it shibouri? – the Japanese running stitch that’s really clear
I think you mean sashiko, shibori is the very intricate Japanese tie-dying. I could get a sashiko effect if I use DMC Perlé Cotton, but it might be hard to get the exact colour I want…
Yes, that’s what I meant. Just as well you know the correct terminology! At the various yarny events I do, there are often indie dyers who also dye embroidery threads. I didn’t realise that was a thing, nor that embroidery silks come in different types, including synthetic and cotton for the vegans. It might be worth investigating. When I was at Seam Haberdashery in Topsham last week there were some divine ones that made me want to find a way to use them.
I’m going to search for DMC Perlé Cotton No. 8 in a nice green or variegated colourway. I’ll buy online if I can’t find it in my local shops.
Sounds perfect
Looking very very good 😊
I’m thinking turquoise would look awesome 🤩
Turquoise would be nice, but I’m really feeling green for this particular quilt…
I think green as well there then would be more green… if you know what I mean!
I know exactly what you mean. It needs some green!
Definitely green for a trellis.
I thought so too.
I am really taken with the diamonds – a shape I hadn’t thought of using for hexies. I have nothing to offer on the thread colour – sorry!
Many years ago I saw bed hangings in the V&A textile collection, where the patches were arranged in a trellis pattern in green. Those were clamshells, and thus far more complicated, but I fell in love with the trellis arrangement. This is the first time I’ve actually made it, and it’s so much fun!
You’ve really moved it along, Kate. I’m excited to see the finished border and the striking thread you choose.
I’m on the last bordered column, but I still have a lot of work to do infilling around the outside edge. I’m hoping to find some thread soon, to show against the dark blue.
That does sound like a lot of work, but hopefully joyful work.
It’s definitely enjoyable, able to be done in small, manageable chunks, and I’m so pleased with how it’s looking.
Yippee!
Looking good! Are you taking off the excess three hexies from the top to use at the bottom?
Probably not, as all the joins are continuous, and if I snip anywhere it’ll unravel. But I’ll do fills for the bottom in colour and fills for the top in dark blue.
Looks like a very pretty project!
It’s much more interesting in real life than in the photos, which are too busy focusing on the dark blue to give the paler colours their due.
