Heaven for Beginners #2: quilting half done

Halfway there with the quilting.

It’s the Australia Day long weekend, and my LQS is closed. Which is a bit of a drama, as I ran out of thread, spray starch and 505 basting spray all at the same time. I managed to get the thread and a small (non-economical) bottle of the Best Press spray starch elsewhere, but the 505 spray baste is only available there. I still have a bit of an inferior product only kept for emergencies (which I think this now is!), so I’ll have to use that up, but after that, I’m at a standstill until tomorrow, which is very frustrating. I have only myself to blame, of course, for not watching my supplies!

Having said that, I’m pleased with how the quilting’s going. I’ve set myself a stupid deadline – of course – and am now aiming to have it ready by 8th February, as the niece for whom it’s intended is leaving for uni on 9th February. I’m not positive I’ll make it, lots of other stuff on, but I’m going to give it a darn good try. I still have to add a hand-width border around the outside of the whole thing, and then bind it. No pressure…

Meanwhile, the rain is falling outside and it’s a perfect day to spend quilting!

  1. Well I’m glad to hear you have some rain – has your rainy season started, or is this just a gift? I don’t wish to jinx anything here, but we have had two weeks or more of settled warm and sunny weather 🙂

  2. things happen, I ran out of spinning fibre during our recent snow and too far to walk to get more. Phooey! Love the quilt colours. Hope the niece knows how precious it is.

I think the niece does know, she’s been drooling over the quilt I made her mother for some time now… And you’re right, run-outs happen, I should have been more on the ball.

  3. Happy that it’s raining & yes the best time to do the things you love ❤️
I’m positive you will meet your deadline 😍

Love to hear you have rain. Over here we are always nagging when we have a rainy day, not me, cos I know how important the rain is, not only for the garden but for our farmers and animals.

Exactly. And it’s such a blessing. Even Mouse has stopped fussing about getting his fur wet. This morning on our walk he was paddling and playing in the stormwater drain 🙂

Bless him ! My dogs don’t like rain either but when there is a layer of snow (not often but it happens) then they are like children and have lots of fun playing in the snow. 😀

Oh how I hate those run-out moments, and don’t they always happen when you can’t go shop for more? I remember a time that I’d just moved. I ran out of something for sewng, forget what. I hopped on a bus to go downtown, and only then did I learn that all stores in my new town closed on Wednesday afternoons!

    • katechiconi says:

Aaargh! That would have annoyed me a lot. Here, it’s Mondays you have to watch for. I’ve got all the fabric and batting and thread I need now, but the basting spray’s a bit critical and I only have a waft left…

I’m glad to hear of the rain. Your finished part looks really good. Wow, what are the chances you’d run out of 3 necessities at once?

    • katechiconi says:

Yes, it’s the trifecta, isn’t it. I was totally unable to progress… Still stuck now because of the spray mount, but at least with the thread I got that third row done!

Rain sounds wonderful, and quilting with rain on the roof is always a nice way to spend the day. So sorry about the supply woes.

  9. You’ve done well to get as far as you have with what you’ve got. Happy to hear you are getting rain, and I hope some finds it’s way south… the hills have finally turned their beautiful summer shade of green here, I’d hate to lose it.

  10. Oh, my! You will really have to hurry to get that done by the 8th. Time does sneak up on one. As for the run out, I know it well. When I lived on the mountain we had to go 2 1/2 hours to get to a store that had what I needed. It wasn’t fun in summer but in the winter snow, it could be treacherous. I think that’s why I still always keep too much close by. I’m sure she will love the quilt when she sees it though. Glad you are getting rain.

I’ve got the next row basted with the last of the emergency can, and halfway quilted. It’s not so much the quilting that worries me as the assembly… We’ll see how I get on.

My money’s on a timely finish – based purely on previous Superwoman type feats.

Looking super and how nice to read that you have rain.

The Wet has finally arrived, only two months late, but no-one’s complaining, especially all those Central Queensland communities who’ve not had rain for years and are getting some now.

Good luck! Nothing like a deadline to keep you on track! It is looking lovely.

  14. claire93 says:

it’s looking gorgeous, Kate. Fingers crossed you manage to make your deadline

  15. craftycreeky says:

It looks great, it’s a tight deadline but I think you’ll do it 🙂

Ugh. I hate when I run out of materials and supplies. Especially when I am in that “I just have to create mood.”

The quilt is growing so nice!
