Welcome once again to ScrapHappy Day!
It’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.
For a change, I’m not showing the hexie project I’m making for Days for Girls. Instead, I decided to use some more recent scraps for a small, quick project.
I had a good few largish scraps left over from making the bag for Chippy. When I say large, the biggest piece was about 12 x 5 inches, the others were smaller. But there was enough to piece together something small but cheerful. Chippy likes her big, big sunglasses, so I though a pouch that might serve as a sunglass case would do the trick. It’s also large enough for an iPhone or other large smartphone if that’s what she prefers. You may remember some time ago I made something similar for myself, from pink scraps.
I sandwiched a pieced outer with a batting scrap and a scrap of the blue I used for a recent top, quilted it with straight parallel(ish!) lines, and bound it with some leftover green binding. It’ll be hard to lose inside a handbag, don’t you agree, even inside the bright green lining of her new tote?
And now I have only really small scraps of that Kaffe Fasset Artisan fabric, but I’m sure they’ll be making an appearance in some scrappy blocks or strips some time or other…
ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of genuine scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful or useful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link. Regular contributors will receive an email reminder three days before the event.
Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time (they may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at). If you’ve copied this list from previous posts, please use the one below as it’s the most up to date – we are being joined by Sunny, a new member 🙂

Thank you my beautiful friend again … looks like I’m cooking special dinner for you every night we are together at NH as a thank you for all this beautiful hand made stuff ♥️
No, no! This is your holiday too… I hope your sunnies or phone or whatever will fit.
I’m sure it will fit ❤️
Not long now till you find out for sure 😉
I kowwwwwww … so excited
tick, tick, tick….
Great idea. I have some oversized sunglasses in need of a case. I’m on it!
It’s such a quick and easy thing to make, and an opportunity for some fancy quilting if you feel like it.
Gorgeous Kate ~ literally! And bright is such a good idea in a handbag. It was brought to my attention by an elderly friend who asked why handbags always had dark linings, which made it impossible for people with poor eye sight to see. I realised it wasn’t just a problem for older folk.
I literally *never* lose my pink sunglasses case in my handbag, and my phone case is bright green and my fold-up shopping bag is purple. It makes life so much easier…
I do like how those Kaffe Fasset pieces get smaller and smaller and still are used! I’ve not made a post on my blog for some four months I think – and even longer joining in with scraphappy – maybe next month there might be something ……
The colours are so saturated that even tiny snippets have something to contribute 🙂 It’s the same with all his fabrics. Occasionally I’ll dive to the bottom of one my scrap baskets and find a real vintage Kaffe treasure. I hope you will join us next month, I love your work!
Thank you Kate 🙂
oh wow! when you go “bright” you really go all the way, don’t you!
I love the fabrics and that green is fabulous!
No point being half-hearted about it, especially when you have prints as gorgeous as this one. Plus, there’s a good practical reason for it.
Brilliant! A sunglasses case you need sunglasses to look at. 😎
Exactly! It lights up the inside of any handbag 🙂
Love the colors! and what a great idea for a quick project and gift.
It’s so economical on supplies, being all scraps, and a great way to make a personalised gift. You could make it with a flap or a button and loop, but I’ve never needed it with my own pouch.
It’s beautiful for something small. What a great gift. I’m sorting out my sewing room this week. Can’t find anything after the holidays. Too much shifting around. You always come up with the best stuff.
I had a big tidy a week ago when I swapped things round a bit. Now, I just have three boxes to unpack and find homes for the contents. I suspect I’ll be throwing a lot out and condensing what remains – it was last minute panic-packing from the sewing room when we moved house.
Just loving those zingy colours, absolutely perfect for sunglasses!
That’s what I thought 🙂
Åh, I love those fabrics, lovely colors!!! And yes, I have noticed the new member and updated my list!!!!
Good…. and good!

I love those bright colours! I have made several glasses cases over the years – a good way to use small pieces and a present that is easy to post!
Isn’t it? It’s especially fun this time because it matches the bag I’d already made.
Lovely colours… ideal for not getting lost.
Exactly! Especially as when you grope in your bag for sunglasses it’s usually because you’re being dazzled – especially Down Under.
Excellent idea and fabulous Colours!
Thanks to Kaffe Fassett and his gorgeous fabric designs 🙂 I can’t bear to waste a scrap!
Me neither and I think they’re more satisfying to use than new and, because you’ve worked with them before, you already love them more than the new stuff – if you know what I mean. Or is that just my madness?
Not madness at all. I have Kaffe Fassett scraps from over 10 years ago, and I always use them grudgingly, because once they’re gone, they’re gone and you can’t get the fabric any more. At least the Artisan range is still on sale!
Always good to know I’m not alone 🙂
This is really lovely !! now she’ll always find her sunglasses what with this bright green fabric !!
That’s the plan!
Darling idea and gift – the material perfect. She’ll never miss places her sunglasses again 🙂
I’ve never understood why bag linings had to be dark (unless it’s not to show how grubby they get, ew!), but at least this will show up against the dark interior of a dark bag.
Just love the bright colors! What a great idea( That I may have to borrow). 😉
Do, I’d love to see what you come up with 🙂
beautiful colours, too precious to waste. Your friend will love it. 🙂
Far too good to throw away! She already does….
Beautiful, clever, resourceful… as always 🙂
Thanks! Can I make you a scrappy something? There’s time before we head south…
Well, now you ask… only if it’s not too much work and do-able. I’m in need of a small flowery teapot design creation I can frame… similar in size, style to the teapot heat mat quilt you made me, for the kitchen wall.
Consider it done. Any colour except red… If you’re going to frame it I assume it doesn’t need quilting? Do let me know if you have a colour preference and *would* like it quilted, though.
You got it! But some red is ok, as it’s for the kitchen which as you know has every colour going hanging on the walls 🌈
OK, that opens up my choices a bit. I have something very pretty which includes red…
I’ve finally been upgraded to a smartphone. Been thinking I’ll have to make a case of some kind for it. This would be a good place to start!
I’m a total klutz with dropping stuff, and I therefore have a proper leather fitted phone case with a screen cover and magnetic catch, otherwise my phones would last about 5 minutes. But if you’re not as clumsy as me, this pouch would work well, especially if you put some kind of closure like a flap or button and loop, or Velcro® tab. Plus it’s a way to keep your favourite scraps and colours about you!
scrappers might be interested in this blog posted today, Jan.16, http://www.annwoodhandmade,com She does interesting work almost exclusively from scraps and is asking if anyone wants to participate in a scrap exchange. 🙂
Jean, thank you so much for this! I’ve been over there and she makes wonderful stuff. I’ve put in an invitation in case she or any of her readers want to participate in ScrapHappy too, as well as subscribing to her blog.
sorry — that is http://www.annwoodhandmade.com (my fingers are cold this winter morning)
I’m not sure if cold fingers are better or worse than slippery, sweaty ones… Our humidity is through the roof right now.
What a lovely gift, and a clever idea! I think this group is really going to inspire me to think more creatively about the scraps in my stash!
I do hope so, it’s good to get them out in the sunshine to play!
