ScrapHappy November

Hello again, it’s time be happy with your scraps.

It’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

I’m rather happy this month, because I’ve managed to put together another 3 blocks – not much visible change in the sheer quantity of scraps in my ‘collection’, but at least the older ones are slowly getting used up, while I generate some more!

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials.

It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, sculpture or a pair of socks. Anything made of scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them all into something beautiful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not pull them out, make something pretty and join us on the 15th of each month?

Either email me at the address on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link. Regular contributors will receive an email reminder three days before the event.

Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time (they may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at). The list of names and blog addresses was getting rather long, so Gun and I have decided to just give the names, which link to the blogs. Just the same, only shorter!

Kate (me!)Gun, TittiHeléneEvaSue, Nanette, Lynn, NormaLynda,
Birthe, Turid, Cathy, Debbierose, Tracy, Jill, Claire, JanKaren,

month. Welcome, Nancy!

See you again, same time next month!

ScrapHappy October

More ScrapHappiness, more pastels again, and this time I’ve made a serious dent in the green pile!

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host  ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This month I made scrappy blocks in pale green and pale red, and I really like how they look. The red especially contrasts very well with the strong red of my earlier scrappy block.

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of scraps is eligible. ScrapHappy September

I can’t believe how quickly this has come round again!

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host  ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This month, I’ve been digging for my pastel scraps in the teal and pink boxes, and I like the results! They’ll contrast nicely with the strong-colour blocks, but they still mop up those scraps really well. Next month, I think I’ll try for red and green.

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. ScrapHappy August

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This month, I’ve had a bit of a rummage in my surprisingly large box of brown scraps. I say surprising because brown is probably one of my least favourite colours to quilt with. Most of the scraps date from the time I made a Tree of Life quilt for my brother. The tree itself was made up of strip-pieced multiple brown fabrics, hence the generous array now at my disposal. I still haven’t made much of a dent in the brown scraps!

For the second block, I’ve made something from my neutrals box, picking out black, white and grey to go with the other strong colours I’ve already used.

After this, it’ll be time to start again, but this time using the paler, less saturated scraps for contrasting lighter blocks.

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. ScrapHappy July

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This time, I’ve gone to my two largest scrap boxes: blue and teal/ aqua. I have about twice the amount of both as I do of other colours, so it was easy to dive in and find plenty of variety.

I really love both of these, especially the tiny little scraps of beloved fabrics I’ve had for many, many years. There are pieces that sing to me, that instantly take me back to past times and places, to brilliant memories and huge learning strides.

The quilt that comes into being from all these scrappy blocks is one I will want to keep for myself… forever.

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. ScrapHappy June

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This month, I’ve once again dived into my sorted scrap boxes to make single-colour scrap blocks. I had some beautiful reds to play with, and I really love the resulting block! I have a modest range of greens: a fair few bright greens, a few darks and a handful of olive/pea greens, so I went with the latter because I love how they play together. And strangely, despite the fact that yellow and orange are colours I very rarely use, I have a good supply of both. So naturally, I had to complete the red, amber and green traffic light trio! Next month I may give turquoise/ teals a go – I do have a huge range of teal scraps to play with, after all! Oh, and maybe also a blue block, since of all the scrap colours I have the most blues.

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. ScrapHappy May

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host  ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

I gave my caravan sewing set-up a test drive this month. Rather than take the hand-stitched Anemone scrappy quilt blocks away with me for this month’s ScrapHappy, I decided to give something new a try. I took two ziploc bags of scraps away with me, one purple and one pink. I’ve made a scrappy block out of each bag, and I think this’ll be an interesting new thing to continue with for future ScrapHappy posts. The photos are a bit grim, but it was the best I could do with the lighting at my disposal and the space I had. Something to think about for future trips…

ScrapHappy April

And here we are again, making pretty things from scraps.

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

Now with 15 hexie flowers. Loads more to add!

This month, I’ve returned to the Anemone scrappy quilt, joining some of the blocks I’ve made and some ‘between’ hexies, rather than making loads of new ones. The joining part isn’t quite so much fun, but is highly necessary if all the hexie flowers are to become a quilt, so I have to be strict with myself and get some of it done before I’m allowed to go back to making flowers again.

This was before. 11 hexie flowers. Oh yes, and the other way up!

ScrapHappy March

Time for more ScrapHappiness 🙂

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This month, I’ve done something completely different. I’ve had very little time for the Anemone hexies, and have thrown together a scrappy block selected from a handful scooped out of my most recent scrap bucket. I have many teal scraps (big surprise there!), and this is going to be one of the final TWX blocks, a good use for them, I feel.

I say ‘most recent’ because I have multiple scrap buckets, and have added to my ever-growing To Do list a plan for a serious scrap manage-ment session once I’ve got a couple of projects out of the way. I’ll start by sorting them into colours, which seems the simplest plan of attack, followed by cutting them into useful sizes, and if not big enough to cut to a useful piece, I’ll sew them into one of these random blocks again.

I’m never going to be the kind of person who cuts to size and files away the minute I create a scrap, but if there’s a system going (apart from ‘toss it in the bucket’), I’ll try and use it. Try. I make no promises 😉 When you’re going with the flow, who has time to cut her scraps into tidy shapes?

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. ScrapHappy February

Already! Time goes so fast…

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

Well, I’ve been working on several other and more urgent projects, so my progress on the Anemone scrappy quilt hasn’t been so very impressive. I’ve been stitching assembled hexie flowers into an ever-increasing piece.

The worst thing is that my lovely camera has decide to go on strike and I simply cannot get it to take a photo with auto focus switched on so that images are crisp. It’ll have to go into hospital tomorrow, where hopefully a nice man will twiddle a couple of switches and tell me “You had the bftrglsgl operating at ISO 3 million and the aperture at 700, and you didn’t stand on one leg while pressing the shutter button in halfway, so of course it wouldn’t focus”. And I shall feel like a fool and accept his scorn and the fix gratefully… because truthfully, I should inform myself better about this camera’s amazing abilities. But all I want it to do is take a decent, in-focus image with minimum fuss. And up to now, it has obliged me.

Here’s where I’ve got to (not too hideous, mostly in-focus photo taken with my phone instead…):

anemone-phone-1

And this is how it looked before, so progress hasn’t been too shabby. Yes, I do know it’s upside down compared with how I showed it before, but I find I now prefer it this way 🙂  I shall also refrain from making and showing new hexie flowers till all the ones I have are sewn in. It’s getting too confusing trying to work out which ones are new, and which you’ve seen before!

It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into some-thing beautiful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address shown on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. You don’t have to worry about a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link.

Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time (they may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at):
