ScrapHappy April

And here we are again, making pretty things from scraps.

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

Now with 15 hexie flowers. Loads more to add!

This month, I’ve returned to the Anemone scrappy quilt, joining some of the blocks I’ve made and some ‘between’ hexies, rather than making loads of new ones. The joining part isn’t quite so much fun, but is highly necessary if all the hexie flowers are to become a quilt, so I have to be strict with myself and get some of it done before I’m allowed to go back to making flowers again.

This was before. 11 hexie flowers. Oh yes, and the other way up!

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address shown on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. You don’t have to worry about a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link.

ScrapHappy March

Time for more ScrapHappiness 🙂

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

This month, I’ve done something completely different. I’ve had very little time for the Anemone hexies, and have thrown together a scrappy block selected from a handful scooped out of my most recent scrap bucket. I have many teal scraps (big surprise there!), and this is going to be one of the final TWX blocks, a good use for them, I feel.

I say ‘most recent’ because I have multiple scrap buckets, and have added to my ever-growing To Do list a plan for a serious scrap manage-ment session once I’ve got a couple of projects out of the way. I’ll start by sorting them into colours, which seems the simplest plan of attack, followed by cutting them into useful sizes, and if not big enough to cut to a useful piece, I’ll sew them into one of these random blocks again.

I’m never going to be the kind of person who cuts to size and files away the minute I create a scrap, but if there’s a system going (apart from ‘toss it in the bucket’), I’ll try and use it. Try. I make no promises 😉 When you’re going with the flow, who has time to cut her scraps into tidy shapes?

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. ScrapHappy February

Already! Time goes so fast…

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

Well, I’ve been working on several other and more urgent projects, so my progress on the Anemone scrappy quilt hasn’t been so very impressive. I’ve been stitching assembled hexie flowers into an ever-increasing piece.

The worst thing is that my lovely camera has decide to go on strike and I simply cannot get it to take a photo with auto focus switched on so that images are crisp. It’ll have to go into hospital tomorrow, where hopefully a nice man will twiddle a couple of switches and tell me “You had the bftrglsgl operating at ISO 3 million and the aperture at 700, and you didn’t stand on one leg while pressing the shutter button in halfway, so of course it wouldn’t focus”. And I shall feel like a fool and accept his scorn and the fix gratefully… because truthfully, I should inform myself better about this camera’s amazing abilities. But all I want it to do is take a decent, in-focus image with minimum fuss. And up to now, it has obliged me.

Here’s where I’ve got to (not too hideous, mostly in-focus photo taken with my phone instead…):

anemone-phone-1

And this is how it looked before, so progress hasn’t been too shabby. Yes, I do know it’s upside down compared with how I showed it before, but I find I now prefer it this way 🙂  I shall also refrain from making and showing new hexie flowers till all the ones I have are sewn in. It’s getting too confusing trying to work out which ones are new, and which you’ve seen before!

ScrapHappy January

As you can see, Anemone’s in bloom!

anemone-start-of-assemblyAt left you can see three more hexie flowers I’ve made (loads still to go) and I’ve actually started assembling the centre section. The pace on this project has slowed a bit now that I have another OCA quilt in progress, but things are still happening. The two quilts I’m working on concurrently, this one and the Hatbox quilt, are symbiotic; a fabric I’ve used for the Hatboxes will then provide scraps for Anemone. All very satisfactory!

ScrapHappy December

It’s that time again – already!  Why does time go so fast, especially at the end of the year…?

big-hexies-3Once again, it’s the 15th of the month, the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps. This month, the big hexie quilt has a name at last. I’ve realised how much these black-centred hexie blocks resemble the flowers of Anemone coronaria. Just Google it for yourself; do an image search, and you’ll see. I grant you that my palette is a little more extensive than the range of colours the flowers come in naturally, but still, the name Anemone seemed right.  Wikipedia has a pretty source for the name:

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Greek anemōnē means “daughter of the wind”, from ánemos the wind god “wind” + feminine patronymic suffix -ōnē. The Metamorphoses of Ovid tells that the plant was created by the goddess Venus when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her dead lover Adonis. The name “windflower” is used for the whole genus as well as the wood anemone A. nemorosa.

ScrapHappy November

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

And here it is, my latest scrappy project, currently imaginatively called Big Hexies (needs work, I know!). You may have seen the post earlier this month on my first batch of hexie flowers. Here’s the next lot!

ScrapHappy October

Hurray, tis done, tis done!

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host  ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

And I’m extremely Happto tell you that the very Scrappy Grey Nomad quilt is completed. The scrappy sashing and scrappy binding are on, and here it is in all its magnificent scrappyness:

The front:

grey-nomad-front

And the back:

grey-nomad-back

It was actually ready over a week ago, but I decided to hold it back for this post to celebrate a shoebox and more of scraps used up. Now all I have to do is come up with another nice long project that will use loads of scraps. Thinks… I suspect it may be hand-stitched hexies for a good while. Bigger pieces – I’m using 2 inch hexie papers, which are 2 inches on each side – but still scraps. I’ll be making a good start on it when I go on leave in a week’s time, as it’s my travel handwork.

ScrapHappy September

Woo hoo, do I have scrappiness to show you this time!

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

You’ll recall that my postage stamp blocks were being turned into a quilt, now known as the Grey Nomad. Well, I’ve got the whole thing quilted, and all that’s left is joining the blocks and binding the quilt:

grey-nomad-blocks-quilted

Not only that, but the back is very, very scrappy. Now, the fronts are all the same: bright postage stamp square surrounded by plain grey border. The only difference lies in whether they were quilted up and down, or side to side. So I allowed myself to have fun with the layout of the back. You can see the quilting direction on the back of the blocks, and as long as I maintained the alternating direction, I could play around with the back blocks as much as I liked. And here’s the final layout, very gypsyish and scrappy indeed and not at co-ordinated 🙂

ScrapHappy August

A new ScrapHappy landmark for me!

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host  ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

ScrapHappy selectionI’ve finally made enough (25) scrappy postage stamp blocks to start assembling the quilt they were intended for. The proposed layout has the blocks laid out in a 5 x 5 square arrangement, with wide sashing between them. The sashing will be split by a narrow joining strip – yes, this is going to be another QAYG, for speed and ease – in the same bright scrappy colours as I’ve used for the postage stamp blocks themselves, for visual interest.

I’m going to bend the (not very strict) rules a little here. To my mind the wide sashing cannot be made from scrap; I want all one solid colour or the thing will be visual chaos. But the major design elements of the quilt will be scrap, so I’m letting myself call this a ScrapHappy quilt. Still a good bit of work to do, cutting the sashing strips, making loads of scrappy joining strips, quilting, etc, but it’s gone from a pile of blocks to having a destination. The back will be made up of oddments and fat quarters from my stash which I never have and never will use, so they might as well be scrap!

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. See you again, same time next month!

ScrapHappy July

More scrappy loveliness this month.

Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

Sunnies case detail

Scrappy Sunnies caseJust for a change, I haven’t made a postage stamp block!  I’ve made a case for my sun-glasses. This came about because I got fed up with losing my existing black vinyl case in the black depths of my black handbag, next to my black wallet. So I’ve gone for something totally different. Not much chance of losing this, eh? It uses some of my favourite pink scraps, including that pink paisley teeny weeny binding. I had a scrap strip 1½ inches wide, but I really wanted to use it, so I made it work! I did a bit of freehand wiggly walking-foot quilting to hold everything together. The lining is a scrap of Michael Miller Tiny Guitar Picks in navy and white, from which I’m making myself a summer top, and the batting between the two layers is also pieced scrap, from my big plastic box of batting scraps. I put two strips together and joined them with batting joining tape, which works a treat and saves sewing the pieces together.

Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time (they may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at):
