Not us. The furniture.
In March last year, I posted about turning one huge table into two smaller but much more useful ones. The smaller of the two became our front porch ‘visiting’ table, where cold drinks and tea and peanut butter cookies were consumed. It’s well under cover, but in the recent lashing torrential rain we’ve had, it got soaked, and despite being robust Japanese cedar, it didn’t enjoy the experience.
I therefore decided that a coated, water-resistant tablecloth was called for. You can get some very pretty prints these days as well as the more traditional red and white check variety, and I chose a teal Japanese-inspired print.
After that, of course, my outdoor chairs looked a bit naked. So I’ve set myself the task of making four scrappy cushion covers to beautify them, to match the tablecloth. The cushions will have to come inside at night or during bad weather, but it will make the whole set up look more intentional and elegant, and less practical/ prosaic. Or at least I hope so. In any event, the chairs will be more comfortable if the weave isn’t digging into our backsides! Maybe even some coasters or napkins might turn up eventually. You never know…
It’s not like I lack teal scraps, or anything…
Beautifully bright and welcoming… invites leisurely sitting and conviviality.
… and prevents damage from spilled tea. It’s a pretty design. I was sorely tempted by several others, but this was my favourite.
Gonna be even more gawjus!
It’ll look very comfortable and inviting, I hope!
Absolutely!
Very perky color for the porch. I love it.
Much prettier than the ‘kitchen table’ design of the other one I was looking at.
Fun! Hope you’ll show us the finished grouping. 🙂 It’s hard to find water-resistant tablecloths around here — especially for the gigantic dining room table we have.
We buy it off the roll by the metre here, so even if your table was 4 or 5 metres long, it’d be no problem. And I’ll definitely show the ‘after’ photo when it’s done. Probably after our trip, now…
I haven’t seen “oil cloth” even by the yard (let alone by the metre 😉😂), but then I haven’t looked too hard. I wonder if I live in the wrong part of the country for the average store to sell a pre-made tablecloth — I was hoping to avoid hemming that big a hunk of fabric. Hope you enjoy your “Farewell Tour” with Miz Lizzie. ❤️
Well, at least you don’t have to hem this stuff. I wish it WAS oilcloth, the smell has a real childhood nostalgia kick for me, but it’s just plasticised fabric. Lots to do before we head out, but we’ll get there. His Lordship as yet has no idea, the excitement will be spectacular once he realises!
Can’t wait to see the whole set!
I’ve had a similar experience with our front balcony. Two old wrought iron chairs needed cushions, made 2 each, then decided they really needed a third each. Then a wicker chair jumped into the car from kerbside collection, to replace an old one which is my favourite. Yep, now making 2 cushions for it.
I’ve used some “weatherproof” canvas stuff from Spotty. Hope it lasts!
Love your colour choice, mine is boring grey.
I wish I could lure a wicker chair into my car! Spotlight does have some nice weatherproof stuff, I think there are some pretty Jocelyn Proust prints. Still, too late for that now. I shall have to remember to bring mine inside when we’re done sitting!
What a fabulous place to sit. Of course Mouse will now need a new bed to match!
Yes… I can foresee that none of his three floofs will do anymore… A matching quilt will be called for.
Knew it!
No new floofage for His Majesty? 😉
We simply don’t have floor space inside for more floofs… but outside, I could make him a Receiving Floof, for when His Majesty has visitors! To match the rest of the napery, of course!
