Laying has begun!
The Girls have been studiously ignoring their tastefully appointed nesting boxes up till now. However, having provided them with an alternative out in the chook yard instead of inside the hen house (an Air B-egg-B, if you like), they have decided to finally take the hint. It’s nice and brown, and isn’t even as small as I’d expect a first egg to be.
This is almost certainly Ruth’s work. Currently, she’s the only one that looks ready to lay, although a couple of the others are nearly there. She’s large, her bum is very fluffy, her comb is larger than the others, and both comb and wattles are bright red. She’s also quite assertive about her place at the feeder and at rushing me when I come to the chook run, in case there’s some super-tasty snackage going.
Hopefully Elizabeth, Blanche, Peachy and Lacey follow suit soon.Β Freshly-laid poached eggs on buttered toast: the food of the gods.
I must go and sort out some egg boxes…
Congratulations on the first egg!
Thank you! I feel like a grandma now π
Very nice…fresh eggs! Yummmm
Can’t wait to get a few more, and then we can have a nice feast. I’m thinking eggs Benedict…
Ohhhh π Super fine ππ€
That Ruth is a good girl. Peachy is nearly there too, followed by Elizabeth, but the others are still a way off.
Eggcellent work Ruth! Hopefully your leadership will inspire the others, especially at the Air B-egg-B. (That made me chuckle!)
I have seen Ruth investigating it this morning. You never know… But judging by appearance and behaviours, the next in line will be Peachy. Time will tell.
Happy egg days ahead π
π³ nom nom nom!
Eggs, Eggs, Eggs! How delightful, best thing of all to eat!
They’re sort of miraculous, aren’t they. To create something like that from the inside out and then squeeze it out nearly every day….The Girls have my utmost respect!
Freshly laid, lucky you !!
I had it for breakfast, and it was delicious!
the first of many ^^
It had better be! That first one was very, very tasty!
Congratulations on your chook-fruit!
Cackleberries!
My mouth is watering…..
The yolk was a really dark orangey-yellow, and the white was beautifully firm and dense. A prince among eggs!
Hurray!
Amen!
Happy Ova Day!
Perhaps a standing Ovation next time?
How eggsiting!! Yay for an egg. Here’s hoping for an omelette.
Currently, we’re at 3 eggs, one of them eaten already, poached on buttered toast. I think we’ll need a few more for an omelette, but it looks as if at least one of the Girls is laying regularly.
Eggs from your own chooks taste sooo much better than the ones from the supermart !!!
They really do, and the yolks are an extraordinary colour too.
I know ! Once you tasted home “grown” eggs, you don’t want the ones from the supermarket anymore.
Congratulations! (Mostly to Ruth I guess π)
She’d like me to tell you “Squark! Bork bork bork….” Which I guess is probably chook for “Thanks! A girl’s gotta do…”
I hope there has already been a few more eggs…and of course happiness both in the chook yard and the humans kitchen
About 6 or 7 so far, and it seems like two of the Girls are laying, as the eggs are different colours. And they’re delicious!
