Chookonia is ready.
The roof is insulated, the fencing is finished, the perches are built, the nesting boxes are done, the straw is strewn, the grain bin is filled and the feeder and drinkers are hung.
All that remains is for the sign to go up. Oh, and the Girls themselves, of course. The latter event will wait until we return from our forthcoming trip. I’ll call to order them on 25th and we’ll be able to collect them a few days later.
As for the sign…
We have a round ceramic ‘Chiconia’ plaque beside our front door which my oldest friend had specially made for us as a wedding gift. The Girls deserve their own version, I felt.
I found this old section of plank down the side of our garden water tank, when I was clearing out old, dead fern fronds. It came up nicely after a bit of time with a hand sander to take off the old paint splatters and the worst of the roughness, and that knot at top left suggested an egg, so the rest followed on from there.
I chose a font, printed it out at the right size, traced it onto the wood, and burned it in using my pyrography stylus. It should last many years. Not exactly chainsaw art, but hand-crafted nonetheless.
Even a chicken needs a decent address.
Love the sign! Hopefully, we can get a tour of Chookonia now that it’s all finished (once everyone is settled in and comfy — don’t want to upset the chooks). 🙂
For sure, once the Girls are home!
“…..and burned it in using my pyrography stylus” – just like that?! It’s BRILLIANT!!! Is there anything you can’t do?
Er… yes? Knit? Crochet? Ice cakes? Silversmithing?
Seriously, it’s not hard, you just need a steady hand a bit of patience, and not mind your hair smelling of woodsmoke for a bit afterwards.
You seem like a Jill-of-all-trades to me 😉
That’s a generous way of looking at it. Alternatively, you could say I flit from process to method to minor skill. Thankfully, I have settled on quilting, which suits me best.
Brilliant! Can’t wait to see the chickens!
We’re getting ISA Browns, which are medium-sized layers, averaging about 300 eggs per year. They are economical to feed, friendly and not timid, and I hope that they and Mouse will have a mutually respectful relationship, since they will be sharing the back yard for at least 2 hours a day!
That is a lot of eggs!!!
🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚😁
Love the sign … and your girls will definitely be at home 🏡🐥🐣
We’ve done our best to ensure their comfort and that all mod cons are available. We shall have to see how much sun/shade they can tolerate in that spot, and we have shade options available if necessary – including under the back deck!
How exciting if they can move around freely on the back deck 🥰
Not ON the deck, as we don’t want the furniture covered in chicken poop, but underneath it will be cool and dry, perfect for dust baths and chilling out in the hottest weather.
I realize that … only thought about my reply after I hit send 😀
They could have (and probably will have) supervised visiting, as my last flock were very friendly and liked to sit on my lap, but we do plan to exclude them with a bit of trellis while they’re out of the run.
I would love to see one on your lap and I would love of “doleful eyes 👀 “ when that happens 🤩
It will probably take a few weeks until they’re tame enough. They will need to be personally introduced to Mouse, and he needs to see they are treated as family members and are not toys.
Yes that would be a perfect spot
hope you can teach Mouse not to chase after the chooks when they arrive! Not sure I would have kept hens when we had our Irish Wolfgound.
Luckily he has a very low prey drive, and we walk past chickens and cats every morning without raising so much as an ear. So long as they don’t bolt, he scarcely notices them, and even when they do, he obeys “Leave it!”. I’m hopeful!
fingers crossed ^^
Indeed…
Perfect!
It sort of named itself…
Houses with names always feel a bit magical to me, a little Hundred Acre Wood magic, as if the inhabitants understand places have personalities, (Which they do.) Of course your house has a friend-made sign for it and of course your chickens must too. Love it!
I like names for places, rather than just a lot number, even if it’s just the name of the owner. Here, the place really named itself!
Love it!
It was good to do a bit of wood-burning again. My hand still remembered what to do… Not an ideal piece of wood to work on, very sappy, but I’m pleased with the result.
Well done, Kate!
Thank you!
Great upcycling job with the plank!
Better than a soggy, rotting doom behind the tank!
What a cool idea! I wish we lived in a place where I could have a few hennies to suppliment our diet. Eggs here are getting pretty pricey at over $2 a dozen. Limits me in my fondness for cooking with them.
That’s a pity…
I love the sign! And am so happy you are realising this dream. Funny how things work though… we’ve decided to take a break from chooks. Despite purchasing 4 Bonds Browns layers at the end of April 2020 we are mostly getting 1 egg a day, 2 at most. At that rate I will need to buy eggs… the G.O. isn’t happy and I don’t blame him… the feed bill has escalated beyond the price of even the best of eggs. Our neighbour says she hopes to keep them on as pets… otherwise she has a friend who rehomes rescue chooks which I believe in due course will be the most likely scenario… We’d like to get some caravan trips happening and not have the worry of less than optimal arrangements.
Our elderly neighbours have already said they will happily feed the Girls for us if we have to go away, and the chook yard is big enough for them to scratch around happily without needing to be let out into the back yard. So they shouldn’t cramp our travels at all. Sorry to hear yours didn’t work out. Maybe some time down the line.
Since we came back from our trip around Aus we’ve enjoyed 5 and a half years of chooks… it was a dream come true, and yes, down the line we’ll do it again.
I love the sign. I do wonder whether you decided to have chickens just so you could call their home ‘Chookonia’. 🤣🐔
No, but I married the Husband especially so that I’d get a suitable surname! Seriously, you can’t look a gift horse like that in the mouse, can you?
The chooks will be proud of the address and sign on their humble abode. Lovely work on it with such a bulky burner. My mother had one and played at it for awhile. I passed it on some time ago as I already have too many other interests and no need of signage. Looking forward to open house after they finally get to move in.
I like this kind of burner, even though the handle is bulky, as the fine nickel-cadmium wire nib gives a better, more controllable result than the more slender ‘soldering iron’ type. I don’t use it much any more because of arthritis, but it’s fun to know I can still do it if I need to! I used to decorate wooden spoons and sell them as gifts – for some reason, people loved portraits of their dogs!
Learned something new again today. 🙂 Glad I gave the other burner away.
Love the sign, you almost make me think of getting chucks again – almost 🙂
It’s not for everyone, but I really miss my flock, and it’s been a long time since I had a warm freshly laid egg 😊🥚
looking good all round …. I too looking forward to the house warming, where we get to see what is what…
Probably at the end of the month…
