From little things, big things grow

I have the results of today’s raffle of the Days for Girls items I made.

Bear in mind these were all made from scraps, those for the backings and batting donated by me and the rest as a by-product of Days for Girls’ production of sanitary kits.

The sales of the raffle tickets for the quilt, the table runner and the cushion cover raised over AU$3,000.

I don’t have an exact figure yet, as they were still selling tickets as we took our seats. But it’s a stunning example of the power of recycling.

I’m afraid none of you won anything. The winners were:

T McClymont – cushion
J Bristow – table runner
L Eales – quilt

All locals or known to other team members. I’m so sorry. But I’m already working on the next quilt and have lots of ideas for the next batch of prizes, so there’s always same time next year.

Thank you all for your encouragement and support, whether in words or dollars. The money raised will make a fantastic difference to the work we are able to do. I’m rapt, as they say here – I even got a nice shiny certificate of appreciation, which will hang in the sewing room next to my prized Best In Show ribbon!

Here’s to next year’s effort.

Yes, I’m really pleased to think of all the girls who’ll be able to live a happy, confident and productive life as a result. I’ve been blessed, and I’m happy to pass the blessings on.

    WOW! That is WONDERFUL!!!!

  13. well done, the scraps would only be scraps without your time and skill and for such a worthwhile cause. Congratulations!

    • katechiconi says:

And there’s so MUCH scrap to be put to good use. I will have my hands full for a long time to come, and hopefully, there will be lots more money coming in as a result.

  14. That’s such an awesome figure and the amount of time and love you put into these quilts makes it all so worthwhile. I would love to contribute a prize for the raffle next year. Something small like a cushion cover or Runner or Bowl cosy as these as I’m too new at this to be confident about the quality of my work as a prize. I can send it to you to see if it’s up to standard and if so you can put it up as a donation from my end. Of course I’ll buy tickets again next year as I covet one of those beautiful prizes 💝

What a fantastic effort Kate! Congrats to everyone. As you say, now there are more girls who will be able to have a brighter, educated future. However, I am disappointed that your beautiful quilt is not coming my way 😩. Let me also say that I think the price of the tickets was too low. It may be something to think about for next time.

Don’t be too despondent; this was only the first of what may well be many DfG scrappy quilts. I have already made a start on the next one; not hexies, but still very bright and colourful. I’m not sure I agree about the cost of the tickets, though; their price made them affordable, so people bought more. But maybe next time we might consider a two-tier raffle: one for smaller items and one for larger, with slightly dearer tickets.

    • katechiconi says:

I was fairly stunned myself! So great!

    amazing, amazing, amazing…

  17. Anorina says:

Wow, well done! Amazing result for your hard work.

    • katechiconi says:

It’s such a great result, isn’t it? People have been amazingly generous; some of the ladies sold over $200-worth of tickets. I bet the local co-ordinators are already planning what to spend the money on! We always need fabric, but there’s also thread, PUL, snap fasteners, ribbon, etc. Thankfully, we receive fantastic support from Needleworx, one of our LQS.

  18. Marty K says:

So glad you made a good chunk of change. I’m sure that all three pieces will go on to become treasured family heirlooms.

    • katechiconi says:

Well, the quilt anyway. I’m not sure there’s such a thing as an heirloom table runner or cushion! I have a big iist of ideas for prizes for the next one, different stuff so I don’t keep repeating myself. The only recurrent feature will, I think, be a quilt of some description!

  19. Excellent result. I’m so pleased for the winners, who now like me are fortunate enough to have your creations in their home.

    • katechiconi says:

I was fairly staggered at the result, I must say. And I’m very happy all down the line: donations fully used, waste reduced, landfill spared, hands kept busy, eyes entertained and people kept warm!

  20. knitnkwilt says:

That amount would be impressive if you had bought new fabric. How much more since you used scraps!

  21. fabulous. Well done.

  22. Bear says:

    Well done Scrappy Queen!💃🌹

  23. magpiesue says:

I’ve had such a struggle getting to a point where I could leave a comment! Egads! But enough of that. Well done on the raffle! There’s no question the winners will enjoy their prizes. What happiness!

    • katechiconi says:

I’m so sorry it’s been tricky; I have no idea what that’s about. It was a huge boost to hear the total, very motivating after feeling a bit maxed out. I have a list of things to make for the next one!

  24. gwenniesgardenworld says:

Congratulations with your work !! I am not surprised you got so much money for your work, it is stunning !!!

  25. Such wonderful news all around this week, Kate. I am so happy for everyone. WELL DONE!
