Welcome once again to ScrapHappy Day!
It’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.
And here it is, the third and final piece of the prize trio I’ve made from the Days for Girls scraps. You’ve seen the completed cushion cover (third prize), and more recently the completed Days Gone By hexie quilt (first prize), but I’ve finally got the table runner finished as well, the second prize. This piece uses up the very last flower, the absolutely last hexagon made for the fundraiser. Metres and yards of perfectly usable and useful fabric saved from landfill.
The backing for this table runner is made from offcuts of the backing I made for the quilt, itself made from leftovers in my stash. The binding is made from the spotted spacer fabric I used for my Anemone quilt. It’s truly scrappy. Even the batting is offcuts.
Raffle tickets are now printed and ready to go. If you’re interested in buying one, go to the Days for Girls Mackay FaceBook page to see how. Just AU$5 a ticket for a chance to win the quilt, table runner or cushion cover, or 3 tickets for AU$10. However, at present, payment options are only available to Australian residents.
I know that several of you have expressed interest in buying tickets. Anyone not in Australia who’d like a chance to win, please get in touch with me/leave a comment so we can discuss options. For any of my readers outside Australia, we will have to ask you to pay for postage and packing if you win any of the prizes; for readers within Australia I will donate postage to a destination further than 50km outside the Mackay area. The draw is on 20th March.
And now, I’m ready for some squares. Or rectangles. Or triangles. Anything other than, you know, hexies… Onwards. I have lots of ideas for more fundraiser items, and bags and bags of scraps await!
ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of genuine scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful or useful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link. Regular contributors will receive an email reminder three days before the event.

That’s quite the collection to be raffled off and the last is just as wonderful as the first. You put your all into each and every one. You did such a good thing there.
I’m always happy to donate my time and effort to this particular cause. Why should girls be penalised just for being girls?

I feel it’s important to give what you can. There’s not a lot of free cash, but I can give the work of my hands, and I’m always careful not to get too attached to things I’m going to give away! Having said that, I wouldn’t mind winning that table runner back!

I love it that even batting was made from scraps.
I have a large bag full of batting edges that have been cut off when the quilt was trimmed out. From time to time, I’ll open it up and make larger pieces using batting tape, piecing it together so the seams wander around a bit to prevent weak spots.
Your scrappy blog has really been a wonderful inspiration. I’m pretty low on literal scraps as I’ve cut and stored a bunch of hexies this year. I’m building again as I am making new clothing and quilts.
When you start to use those hexies, don’t forget that progress posts are fine for ScrapHappy too, it doesn’t have to be a finished article.
They’re in a bin at the moment until I get easter dress done.

Thank you, I’m so glad you like it. I have a set of clamshell papers which have been waiting for me for a couple of years. I really want to try that, I love how the scrappy effect looks with them… But it needs much larger pieces than most of the ones I get from the DfG group.

Your quilt is a delight and to me, it looks like Springtime…. perhaps just because I am longing for Spring here amongst the ice and snow! I am sure that the lucky winner of the quilt is going to be thrilled!

Oh, thank you! Hexies were an excellent way of munching up the smaller scraps. I’m now working on cutting somewhat larger squares to turn into a different quilt which will be faster to make, but I definitely foresee a return to hexies in the future for the DfG scraps… 🙂

When the Quilt Center in Lampeter was open with its exhibitions of old Welsh Quilts there was a case with a piece of one they had found which had old socks as batting! The socks were, of course, hand knitted wool and must have been darned until the woman was sick of them and knitted new but saved them and eventually had enough to fill a quilt. Now that really is scrappy! I think we are following an honourable tradition of thrift. I love your hexies and I know you will make more when you have recovered – but not yet.
It sounds as if the make-do tradition is universal. This is a very interesting article on ‘Waggas’ or utility quilts made from whatever was to hand, originally with the sole purpose of keeping the user warm and only later becoming more decorative. I don’t know how to make it so only that post comes up on my home page. My home page has 2 columns so there’s always 2 posts at the top. When I do on inlinks it goes straight to post though. Does that make sense.
It does, but in a separate email, I’ve covered the issue so it doesn’t matter.
