Bench Mat #2

And here is the second scrap-gobbler.

This one is long and skinny to fit the space in front of the coffee machine and kettle. It’s using up the last of the colourful binding fabric, the last of the grey and black print backing, and most of the larger light grey and white scraps. It also fits the space where I do most of my vegetable chopping and slicing, and has the added benefit of stopping the cutting mats and chopping board from walking around the bench top while I work.

I felt a bit bored by the idea of doing more wavy line walking foot quilting on this one. Now that I’ve done these freehand badly-done FMQ serpentines, I feel much less bored about walking foot quilting!  It reminded me exactly why I don’t enjoy FMQ…  Still, it’s not too disgusting and I’m certainly not going to pick it all out. If I ever mention FMQ again, remind me, would you?

Today is the Husband’s birthday. I whipped up a batch of carrot cake cupcakes, his favourite. They had an orange-flavoured drizzle glaze on top; I felt they needed something extra as it was a birthday, although they do taste very yummy without (well, I had to give them a taste-test, didn’t I?). We took Mouse for a lunchtime outing into town yesterday, and he got a rasher of bacon, delivered by hand in small pieces, while we demolished some very delicious chilli crab, scrambled egg, lime and sriracha hollandaise and toasted sourdough. He offered to help with the chilli crab too, but we pointed out that he has failed to enjoy stuff with chilli in it in the past… Tonight we’re eating out again at the Husband’s favourite restaurant.

The broken foot is still encased in the Boot. The fracture clinic told me it’d be six weeks before it was fully mended. Just under two down, four to go. I shall have to wait and see how long I can bear the Boot before I go completely bonkers. I have a strong suspicion that as soon as it stops hurting when I walk, this thing will come off, never to be seen again. After all, the reason crutches are off the menu is that they want me to load bear somewhat so that the bone grows in strongly. Of course I have to wear a sock and a sweaty plastic Boot in the hottest weather of the year so far (38°C/100°F yesterday). Of course it’s a different height from all my other footwear so I’m lurching around like a zombie and giving my back hell. But then again, it could have been so much worse… Blessings counted.

Onwards. I have a new quilt for another niece to think about 🙂

  1. Happy Birthday to The Husband, I’m sure he enjoyed his cakes they sound yummy.
The palaver with your poor foot sounds SO uncomfortable. I do hope it behaves itself and heals quickly.

The dozen cupcakes are down to just 3. Mind you, the Dowager came over to help demolish them and give him his card and present. The foot’s a literal pain, but small beer in the great scheme of things 😉

  2. I wonder if a bit of ply wood and some crepe bandage would do the job of The Boot just as well?!

I love the quilting on the mat- maybe you do need to do more of it. Two meals out , wow, and it’s the husband’s birthday, not yours. Hope you had a great time. Happy birthday to him, the cakes sound yummy. Sorry you are suffering so much, hugs. xx

On his days off we tend to have at least a brunch or lunch out just so we don’t slob at home the whole time. This time, we decided to make it a family affair and invite Mouse along too! Glad you like the quilting, probably a good job you can’t see it close up!

  4. Love the FMQ … as u well know I’m very partial towards it… mine is nothing like yours of course but I get so much joy doing it 🤩. It is very hard on the hands with larger pieces so I’ve taken to smaller pieces and then join with Rag…. yes yes I know … I mix all the processes but again it does appeal to my vagabond side 😃
Your counter tops will definitely reap the rewards and will look a million bucks as well 😍

  5. Happy Birthday again to John and I hope you or he had an extra piece for me 😁🥂😁

lovely mats, especially the binding ^^
Happy birthday to Mr C! You might remember, he and I share a birthday lol. I’ve just made GF cheesecake for dessert tonight!
And “bon courage” with your foot and clumpy shoe. When I had my foot ops a few years ago (one done at a time) I was lucky to have a pair of the clumpy black shoes whicn enabled me to not feel as if I had one leg longer than the other, and save my back being lop-sided when walking.

And a very happy birthday to you too! A pity you’re not close enough for me to bake you a nice GF version of my carrot cake, which is just as delicious. Unless you’d prefer chocolate orange torte? Or pear upside-down cake? The foot is nowhere near as serious or painful as your experience, but it’s amazing how sore one of the long bones in your foot can get when it’s broken. I am coming to loathe these Velcro straps… and I still have 4 weeks to go 😦

  7. I had to google FMQ – I think you did a great job, but unless one really enjoys doing something, there’s no point continuing.
That boot in such hot weather – I feel for you. Agree, though, that it’s small potatoes in the bigger scheme of things. I like the way you think 🙂
And happy birthday to the Husband.

I’m with you on the FMQ – I love the look of it but am always worrying about how the back is looking and whether I’m keeping the stitches the same length etc. Sometimes I just reluctantly admit defeat and move on.
Happy Birthday to husband and I hope you have (or had) a couple of lovely meals out – I’m very jealous as we can only get takeaway restaurant food at the moment
I hope the lurching about on the boot doesn’t drive you too potty. Just think, one day soon it will be a distant memory and you will look back and laugh – well, maybe.

    • katechiconi says:

The back looks about the same as the front, no railway tracks, but the stitch length is pretty microscopic and the curves are pretty wobbly in places, so my eye is offended! I like the serpentines, though… I’ll pass on the birthday wishes – he had a delicious dinner last night that had him smacking his lips all the way home, so he was very cheerful.

Did I read small beer in the scheme of things? Think you deserve a large one. 🍺

  10. Sharon says:

Happy “shared” birthday greetings 🙂 Sounds like a lovely day despite the boot – quick and strong healing vibes being sent. The new kitchen mat is perfect!

  11. Happy Birthday to HoC. Sounds like a fine celebratory day. Other Half’s birthdays are almost as good as one’s own!

  12. anne54 says:

My birthday wishes are heading up north too! 🎉 It sounds like a delicious day.
I am sorry you have to clump around in the Boot. Mouse must wonder why his walks are different.

    • katechiconi says:

Mouse is not complaining, he finds the heat trying and always zooms to the nearest air-conditioned bed the minute we’re through the door! We both love our cooler weather long walks, so roll on winter!

  13. Dayphoto says:

Happy Birthday to your Hubby! I hope you get well fast, being laid up in summer is soooooooo hard.

  14. Belated Happy Birthday to hubby! That mat looks lovely and very useful but if you have used so much grey scrap you will have to buy more! What a pity ;)! The boot must be so annoying but a foot that heals badly will be worse in the long run. Can you take it off if you are sitting with your feet up on the sofa? That might reduce the swelling too – but you would have to have some hand sewing to do or you would go mad!

    • katechiconi says:

I *can* take it off, but only when the foot’s up, and only so long as I don’t try and bend the foot. I’m getting used to it… By the time the 6 weeks are up, I’ll have forgotten how to walk without the Boot!

  15. CurlsnSkirls says:

Well done with the mat! Belated Birthday wishes to the other half, and enjoy a cupcake for me – they sound scrummy! Do get stuck into some sort of hand work and “have a reason” to be sedentary with foot elevated! 💕

  16. Emmely says:

Happy belated birthday to your husband! It sounds like you celebrated well. The FMQ doesn’t look bad at all on my screen.

  17. magpiesue says:

Your FMQ design looks good in the photo. I understand about not being entirely happy with it though. You have to enjoy the process in order to be content with the outcome. 🙂
