Time Flies…

…. when you’re having fun.

I was stunned when this arrived yesterday in my Comments folder. Who knew?  I can’t believe it’s been so long, I’ve had such a lot of fun along the way, have met so many new people in far-flung places, received so much kindness and encouragement, and have made many treasured friends.

And you know what? I’m still on my old free plan. I’ve never felt the need to change how my blog looks, or to add a load of new widgets. I have no intention of monetising or commercialising, and while I welcome new followers with open arms, I don’t feel any urge to aim for SEO, actively attract new followers or sell or endorse anything for payment. Boring? Perhaps, but it suits me.

At some stage I’ll probably run out of data storage space – I do post fairly often, and with photos – and will have to change to a paying plan, but hopefully they won’t force me to change how the blog looks. With luck, all that will change is that I’ll be able to drop the .wordpress part of the blog’s name. I know I’m an old stick-in-the-mud; I don’t like the way they keep changing things ‘to improve your blogging experience’. It doesn’t improve it for me, but I guess it helps and works for others for whom their blog is an income stream or a commercial necessity.

I hope the next 7 years with WordPress will be just as peaceful and enjoyable, and that you’ll all be along with me for the ride.

    Happy Blogiversary! 🤩👏👏🥂

I’m so glad I found you through Conor’s blog. Looking forward to many, many more years of getting to know you.

  2. Congratulations. Your blog is and has been always one of my favourite places to visit 😁 I was on a free plan for 5 years, then went to paid almost 4 years ago cos I wanted a .blog domain name. From my experience not much changed except the url and corresponding breakage to old links, and absence of ads.

Happy 7 years on WordPress Kate! And thank you for delighting us with your beautiful quilts and recipes, your peanut butter cookies are still a family favourite here, and master Clark has joined the peanut butter loving clan! 🥰

7 years of beautiful quilts, yummy recipes, good humour, travellers tales, Mouse stories, positivity and above all else, friendship. Thank you for every one! xxx

    • katechiconi says:

Mouse is relieved to see he’s up there amongst the memorable bits. He’s never quite seen the point of what he calls ‘banging away at that shiny plank’ when I could be stroking him, walking him or best of all, giving him treats. I’m glad you’ve been along for the ride, dear Anne, and here’s to many more years.

Congratulations on your blogiversary. 🙂 I’m with you 100% when it comes to not wishing to monetize or upgrade or any of that folderol. Here’s to at least another seven years of blogging happiness!

    • katechiconi says:

Yes indeed! Still, who knows what the next 7 years will bring? Virtual keyboards, holographic screens… Bet I’ll still want to write and edit in the old way! And a quilt will still be a quilt, and recipes will still need to be tested and tried, and the garden will still grow in the old way…

Congratulations on 7 years of blogging! I am so glad I found you through “The Kitchens Garden” and Cecilia. It has been so lovely to visit you down under as I’m fairly sure I won’t get to that part of the world.
I look forward to seeing your beautiful posts for another 7 years and more. So much to see and learn- thank you for sharing so much of your life with us.

(And I do so love that little caravan!)

I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed visiting Chiconia, and it’s lovely to hear all the different perspectives from followers around the world. I hope you get your own caravan one day 🙂

  7. Congrats on your 7th bloggoversary. A milestone for sure.

  8. Congratulations! Simple is good. If it pleases you and meets your personal goals, that is what matters.

  9. Dayphoto says:

HAPPY Blogaversary! I think I have been with you for a wee spell now. I, too, had to move to a paying plan, and my blog stayed the same. They just get money and I get to BLOG!!! HAPPY HAPPY DAY TO YOU

    • katechiconi says:

Thank you! A few years back, I realised I was heading for my data limit. I realised that if I just reduced the file size of all my photos, I’d extend my blogging life a lot, and so it has proved. I don’t think I’ll need to buy anything very elaborate, and it’ll be worth it, just to stay in touch with everyone.

  10. Not going anywhere. You’re stuck with me.

  11. Congratulations 🎊… and I’m a newborn to this but I do enjoy your blog and everyone else’s that I have become friends with 🥰
Everything you do is a delight and I look forward to many more years of blogging with you ♥️

    What? We’ve never met?
It just feels as if we have.
Happy Blogging Anniversary and here’s to many more years of your wisdom, talent, compassion and humour coming through cyber space at me.

    • katechiconi says:

Thank you, that’s very kind… We *could* get closer to the actual thing if you’d consider one of those new-fangled video communication thingies… but seriously, I consider you a good friend despite the distance and the lack of ability to share a cup of tea/ coffee/ glass of wine (select poison of choice).

      • tialys says:

If it’s after 6 p.m.a glass of rosé would be my poison of choice.
We had to do a ‘swearing a declaration’ thingy over Zoom the other day with some bloke we’ve never met who had to witness the actual words being spoken and the signatures being done. It was awful – not least because, afterwards, he put stills of the event on record and sent a copy to us. 😱

      • katechiconi says:

Hmmmm! Now, where can I access those images, I wonder…. You sound quite traumatised, so I won’t pursue the matter 😉

  13. craftycreeky says:

Congratulations! I’m amazed you haven’t run out of storage, I ran out a couple of years ago even with the paid version!! You used to be able to buy extra storage, I’ve chuntered to wordpress a few times about this no longer being available. as I’m now deleting early photos to make room!
Looking forward to the next 7 years 🙂

    • katechiconi says:

I crop and edit my photos, then save them from say 2 or 3 Mb down to 5-800Kb. It doesn’t seem to affect the quality much on the blog, unless you wanted to zoom right in. The other thing is that I have almost all the F2F images on a separate blog. I suppose if you were particularly crafty, you could save all your images to a new free blog, and then just link to them on your main blog. It ought to work…. I think!

      • craftycreeky says:

I don’t think it helps that with my DSLR camera the photos are 5 or 6 mb each!! I’ve been reducing them down 70 or 80% but it does seem to affect the quality, I did start a separate blog for a while but it was hassle uploading them onto there and then pasting across, I still needed one uploading anyway for a ‘main photo’, that’s pretty much full anyway so I started deleting old ones. It would be nice to have the record but realistically there’s only a old few posts that still get views. I keep suggesting to them that they bring back buying more storage!

      • katechiconi says:

Gosh, those are massive images! I suppose it also depends on the file format you’re uploading. I don’t know what you’re using to edit them, but on my Mac I can open the finished edit in Preview, and then Save As, with an option to save a smaller file size and different format, and rename the image. Slightly more hassle than just uploading, but a huge saving on space.

  14. nanacathy2 says:

Congratulations on being 7. I ran out of data space years ago and frequently have to delete old pictures and posts, but I’m still blogging for free, and like you not actively looking for new followers- I rarely bother tagging anymore. Blogging is wonderful and I am grateful to WordPress. I value your posts so much, please keep going just the way you do.

    • katechiconi says:

I keep tagging because it helps me find blog posts if I’m rootling around in the back numbers. I can do a search in admin for key words and it’ll turn up all the posts I’ve tagged, saves hours. I suppose at some stage I’ll have to consider deleting old posts before I go over to the Dark Side; there are heaps of embarrassingly bad old ones from the early days! And don’t worry, I have absolutely no intention of stopping 🙂

  15. claire93 says:

yoo hoo looking forward to another 7 years with you ^^
I’ve just looked, and I started my WP blog in January 2009 (was on overblog before). It’s a free version, and I still haven’t run out of storage space.

  16. Emmely says:

We started around the same time, I also recently had my 7 year anniversary! You’ve been much better at keeping it up though. 😉
I must admit I’ve hardly changed anything to the looks of the blog in 7 years. I very much dislike the new WordPress blog editor though, I really struggle to get posts to look the way I want.

    • katechiconi says:

I haven’t been exposed to the new Editor yet. I wonder if it’s because I ‘go round the back’; I go into WP Admin, go to Posts, and Add New there instead of using the Write button in the top bar. I find everything there is the same as it ever was – for now. I’m hoping and praying that they won’t change it so much that I can’t make that work for me still….

  17. Happy Anniversary. You are an inspiration.

  18. kymlucas says:

I’m in complete agreement in regard to your approach. I changed blogs when I changed focus from writing to my experience with breast cancer, and now the bees and life. Otherwise, I’d still be at the same web address. Still, I’ll also stick to the free plan until i run out of space, thanks very much.

  19. kymlucas says:

And should have said at the start: Congratulations! 🌈🎈🎈🎈

  20. Sharon says:

Time certainly does fly by. Blog Anniversary Happiness overload…you bring happiness into the world. So glad I found and connected with you. You inspire me 🙂

  21. Happy 7th Blogaversary!! That is a big deal. And the fact that you blog often is even more impressive. I barely ever made it more than once a week. I love coming here for the conversation and the learning of new things. You keep us entertained with Mouse antics and your travels. Looking forward to many more. I agree with all you had to say about free blogging and no ads or monetizing. Not that it wouldn’t help but that’s not what we are about here. I started paying about 4 years ago when they offered me a free year at the conference WP put on here in Portland. Like you, I edit my photos to make them smaller and save on storage. So far, so good. Enjoy your travels and the next blogging years.

    • katechiconi says:

Thank you, Marlene, I appreciate it. I find I’m blogging a bit less than I used to, perhaps because life is a bit less varied under current restrictions. However, you’ll be glad to know there’s another trip in the offing, so hopefully Mouse’s commentary will have some entertainment value there!

  22. modflowers says:

Happy WordPress anniversary! It’s nice that they remind you how long you’ve been blogging, isn’t it? If you’re happy where you are there’s no need to change unless, as you say, you’re forced to.
I moved over to a paid WordPress.org site a few years ago now, as I wanted more freedom to make it look the way I wanted. I also thought I might have a shop on there at some point, but I still just have a link to Etsy, rather than a proper webshop of my own – that’s something I’m still working on! I too find it hard to blog as often as I used to. Sometimes it feels like I’ve said all I had to say!

    • katechiconi says:

I hope you do keep it up, because I so love the tiny people and creatures who inhabit your space on the Web! But I suppose we each produce content as the creative urge moves us; for me, it’s almost continuous creation of one project after another. And if not sewing, then recipes, and if not recipes, then travel. Good job this blog isn’t about just one thing!

  23. Keep going Kate! I love your blog and the mix of things you write about. Orchid and Roo love Mouse’s posts too.

  24. I absolutely LOVE our connection and our online community – Congratulations!
