So… what’s next?

There’s a slight feeling of anticlimax in my sewing room.

After the much-anticipated finish of the Hatbox quilt, I’m looking around and wondering what I’m going to work on next. There are plenty of options, but there’s also a slight sense of needing something undemanding. I have the perfect project!

Do you remember the $11 Rainbow Quilt?Β I made a whole load of scrappy blocks, but when it came down to the wire, some were strong, bright colours and others were pale and pastel. In the end, I made the $11R quilt out of the brights, but that left me with a pile of pretty pastels, 2 each of pink, blue, teal, red, yellow, green, lilac and brown.

Here’s how they’re looking. Now, the plan is to frame the blocks in pale grey and white fabrics, make pastel sashing using the same method as I did for the other quilt (ie, pieced onto till roll paper), and back the blocks with… something. I have some pale mulberry shot fabric, but I’m not totally sure there’s enough, I’ll have to check. Otherwise, I’ll have to mix it with other fabric, which would be in the scrappy spirit, so I’m not too fussed about that.

Hmm. We need a name for it, too. I’m thinking Opal works; it has all the pale milky colours of Australia’s classic gemstone.

Ahhh. That feels better. There’s a plan, and a project!

Oh, and by the way, Happy WP Anniversary to me. Yesterday, it’s been six years since I started blogging. SIX!! How did that go by so quickly…?

  5. I don’t think I’ve seen anything you have put together in terms of colour palette that I haven’t really liked. You have the gift for sure! This is just lovely and I’m not a pastel girl, if you know what I mean. Happy Anniversary!

  8. I am a pastel girl and I LOVE this quilt too. Just showed my daughter your hatbox quilt as well. Like Pauline, I don’t think you’ve made anything I haven’t liked a lot. Congratulations on 6 years of wonderful blogs. You teach and share while making us want to go that extra step. You are an inspiration, Kate. Keep them coming. πŸ˜‰

That’s such a kind thing to say, thank you, Marlene. I try not to make the posts sound too ‘teachy’; after all, lots of the readers are probably more skilled and experienced than I am, but if I find an easy way to do something, I’m bound to share it so everyone can benefit.

  9. Happy Anniversary!! Your Opal quilt will be a beautiful gem just like you!!❀️❀️

  10. Too lovely for words, as always. And happy anniversary, six years is a lot of words!! πŸ™‚

happy anniversary! I Wonder how many quilts we’ve enjoyed seeing you make suring that time?

  12. rutigt says:

I know that feeling…..”what shall I do now? ” It happens every time I have a finished quilt. I know I have a lot of UFO:s, but where will I start? Right now my quilt Mother Earth is blocked and ready to get quilted, but i donΒ΄t feel like doing that. So be happy you still have projects to work on! Those scrappy pastell blocks are looking great!

    • katechiconi says:

There’s a lot of projects waiting in the cupboard, but I brought out three I really wanted to see finished. This is the last one, and then I’ll need to dive into the cupboard again!

Happy anniversary πŸ™‚ Opal is going to be a very pretty quilt

  14. tialys says:

Lovely colours in those blocks and I’m sure it will turn out to be as gorgeous as your first one.
Happy 6th Anniversary. It made me go and look at how long I’ve been blogging and my first post was in August 2009 so over 10 years now. Scary how the time whizzes past.

But . . . but . . . I thought we were heading to Parterre next?! I like this Opal quilt but I love Parterre . . . I’ll try to be patient. And your mention of the anniversary made me go look, too–I started 6 years ago in July!

    • katechiconi says:

Parterre is going to be the new equivalent of the Hatbox quilt, in that I’ll make one or two each month and when I have enough, I’ll quilt one or two a month. Or maybe more, if I get the bug. But if I try and make all the blocks in one go, I’ll get annoyed with it, because they’re fiddly, and it’ll turn into a UFO. Opal is a UFO and needs to be finished so it’s off my mind and conscience πŸ™‚

  16. nanacathy2 says:

Happy Anniversary, and the new quilt is so pretty.

  17. Joanne S says:

I feel as though I have too many WIP or UFOs… and then…nothing. Ha! I need a project in the works to feel sane. Congrats on the anniversary!

    • katechiconi says:

Same! Quite what I’ll do when I reach the bottom of the WIP/UFO pile, I don’t know, but I’m going to give it a good old try. And of course, new quilts will insinuate themselves into the process along the way.

  18. Happy Blogaversary to you πŸ™‚ So glad I found you and am following along now. I love the pastel softness of these blocks. I know its going to be amazing….

    • katechiconi says:

And we’re very glad to have you among us. This is no. 2 scrappy quilt; the original one was lovely, but has been claimed by the Dowager (aka my MIL), who prefers stronger, brighter colours.

  19. Dayphoto says:

HAPPY BLOGGING ANNIVERSARY!!!! I’ve enjoyed following you for a long time. By the ways what is till roll paper?

  20. Pretty quilt, such a perfectly beautiful name too! A virtual toast to many more blog-a-versaries! Cheers!

  21. anne54 says:

Let me raise a glass of bubbles to you anniversary too. πŸ₯‚ It has been lovely to become friends over that time. This is a lovely, serene quilt, and I think your plans for the grey and white will work perfectly.

  22. Terri says:

Happy Anniversary Kate! I have enjoyed reading your posts for all these years and am looking forward to the next six. Love the colors in the Opal quilt.
