ScrapHappy July: back to Days Gone By

Welcome once again to ScrapHappy Day!

It’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.

Because it’s for a good cause, I’ve gone back to Days Gone By, the scrappy hexie quilt I’m making for Days for Girls. It was fun spending some quality time with Anemone, but as that’s one’s for me, it would be self-indulgent to spend too much scrappy time with it. So, here we are again.

The five hexie flowers at bottom left were only placed before. Now they’re all sewn in. In my defence, although this doesn’t look like much, I have spent the last 12 days feeling horrible with all the fun symptoms of a bad dose of flu… I’ve also spent absolutely hours pulling out the basting and removing the papers from all the flowers except those around the edge, which has made this piece more supple and a lot easier to work with. The papers that are still in good condition will go back into the making process, the ones that are too battered or holey will be recycled.

I’ve also selected the next two rows of hexie flowers to be added, so that should keep me out of trouble for a while… They all need to have their black hexies attached, and then I can start the job of adding them to the whole thing, which will bring it up to almost square.

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of genuine scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful or useful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email me at the address on my Contact Me page, or leave a comment below. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link. Regular contributors will receive an email reminder three days before the event.

Here are the links for everyone who joins ScrapHappy from time to time (they may not post every time, but their blogs are still worth looking at). If you’ve copied this list from previous posts, please use the one below as it’s the most up to date 🙂

  1. Wow! My hats off to you for paper piecing! This will be a labor of love when done and is already on it’s way to stunning!

I enjoy EPP, I can do it with my eyes closed, so this piece grows quite nicely. I have a whole basket of flowers already made, probably enough to finish a lap-sized quilt, so it’s a slow and steady project.

  2. so-o much work. Love all the crazy colours, how big are you aiming for?

    • katechiconi says:

I have a two-hour DfG sewing group each Saturday morning, so I have time allocated each week. I find that much the best way of making steady progress. I’m thinking a lap-quilt size – life is too short for bed-size…

  4. Phenomenal! I love your hexie creations!

  5. Are all the scraps left over from DfG kits that you have made or do you collect other people’s scraps too? It’s an impressive piece of work, but what makes me so happy is that it is also a real representation of all those girls who have been helped by the project.

    • katechiconi says:

The scraps are from the whole sewing team so I got the widest possible range of colours and patterns. I have absolutely loads more, I’d say about 3 more quilts-worth. Each fabric does represent a girl or woman helped to a position of more freedom and dignity, and I’m proud to be making something that celebrates that.

      • I think knowing that each fabric represents a person is wonderful… it’s a bit like the 60 million trebles project that I was involved in – each stitch represented a refugee and seeing all the blankets really brought the scale of the issue to the fore. Keep up the good work – you are all making such a huge contribution to so many women’s lives.

What I like is all those colourful fabrics making what can be a rather dismal time into something much more positive and optimistic.

It is going to be wonderful, and is so pretty.

It’s very varied and fun, isn’t it? Hexies are a slow, meditative way of creating a quilt, so it’ll be a while before it’s done, but I’m enjoying the process.

  8. I love your quilt, such a riot of colour and no doubt memories too.

It´s looking great!! I´m trying to get my scrap happy day out on the air, but WordPress is working so slow………patience, patience and soon I´ll scream PATIENCE……..!

I’m impressed that you got anything done at all, given what you’ve been through!

    looking so colourful ^^

  12. magpiesue says:

It’s looking wonderful! Any idea how big you’ll let this get before you declare it finished? I’ll bet you could make a couple of quilts from the scraps you get as a result of DfG!

    • katechiconi says:

I think it needs to be at least lap quilt size… I’m a way off still. And you’re right about the scraps. The next one I make for them will be simple scrappy squares, so I can machine sew it, I think!

  13. Any progress when down with that nasty flu is impressive. Coming along nicely.

  14. chrisknits says:

Argh! I totally forgot! Oh well, my post today had nothing to do with scraps. Off to read everyone’s posts. Love your hexies!

  15. It is coming along great! I can’t imagine doing all that piecing by hand, and then having to pull out the papers too! But it does sound like a peaceful project to do while recovering. Hope you feel all the way better soon!

    • katechiconi says:

I do love hand sewing, and I could have made my own life easier by pulling out the papers as I went, but tis done now. It’s good to be able to work on it without pressure.

  16. gwenniesgardenworld says:

Shows what you can dow with very little !

  17. Joanne S says:

EPP with your eyes closed? 😀 I am impressed. Still haven’t left my comfort zone to try paper piecing, yet. One day. Love all of the colors!

    • katechiconi says:

OK, perhaps a very small exaggeration, although it would be interesting to take the challenge, at least to baste the fabric onto the paper! It’s not at all hard if you know a few tricks. If you can baste and whip stitch you can EPP.

  18. knitnkwilt says:

It’s the invisible progress that kills me (like removing papers). I don’t mind so much the planning of what next type.

    • katechiconi says:

I’m my own worst enemy with the papers. If I’d just take ’em out as I go it wouldn’t be such a big job. Never mind, it’s done now, and I’ll be more sensible going forward 🙂
