In the Arms of the Angels: the fundraiser

So, massive congratulations to everyone who worked on this quilt, or indeed offered encouragement, inspiration or practical help.

Last night the Trudy Crowley Foundation was launched at a Twilight Dinner at the Mackay Marina, and I’m delighted and thrilled to let you know that the quilt raised $1,050 at the live auction. There was a professional photographer there and a cameraman from the local TV station, so there may be better publicity in the next few days than my phone camera shots… Also present were the deputy mayor and a couple of the local MPs, so the PR team had done their work.

As suspected, the quilt went to Trudy’s great friend and Director of the Foundation, who’d already told me she was prepared to outbid everyone else to secure it. She was as good as her word.

The Foundation has already secured the services of a warm, passionate and dedicated Ovarian Cancer and palliative care nurse, the lovely Rosie, who was at the dinner and has expressed interest in a pair of teal wings to wear at work 🙂

I’ll be having a meeting soon with the organisers to discuss the next quilt, which will be auctioned at the Nude Lunch event. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get it done for this year’s, which is in September, but definitely for the next one.

But maybe not till after I’ve moved house….

It is always gratifying to see a quilt pull in something close to its worth! This one especially. Big cheer from Oregon.

The bidding stalled at around $700 and I was going to be OK with that, but then the auctioneer asked the room “are you really going to leave it at that?” and the bidding picked up again!

Just look how beautiful it is, displayed in all its glory there! I’ll bet it had plenty of admirers but so fitting it should go to Trudy’s friend and Foundation Director. Did you get lots of people asking you about how the quilt came to be?
I am intrigued as to what you will come up with for the ‘Nude Lunch’. Let’s hope my paper piecing skills are up to whatever your fervid imagination comes up with 😉

Yes, there were lots of questions, and people wanting their photo taking in front of it! The annual Nude Lunch is the main fundraising event for ovarian cancer here, and is a much larger affair. I’m hoping we’ll be able to keep on with our ‘punny’ titles, since I find they tend to give me the theme for the quilt. Time will tell!

  13. craftycreeky says:

    Congratulations, that’s brilliant news 🙂

  14. The wonderful collaboration that went into the quilt and into this fundraiser is a large, lingering beauty.

    • katechiconi says:

I feel grateful at the opportunity to make something from the heart and imagination. I’m also delighted that it’s going to someone I know and therefore I may be able to reserve visiting rights!

lovely to hear that your (and other contributors’) patchwork skills were admired, appreciated, and that the quilt did so well in the auction.

  18. Kate, such great news. I’m happy the lovely quilt raised a handsome sum, and I’m happy, too that it’s gone to what sounds like the perfect home. Well done to you and to all that took part.

  19. Terri says:

Congratulations to you and all the other talented quilters who contributed to such a beautiful work of art. I’m glad that it was appreciated so much by everyone at the fundraiser so that it raised such a large amount of money for this worthy cause.

  20. What fabulous news ~ It was such a great collaborative effort and wonderful cause ~ Sharon

Many of us have been working together on Ovarian Cancer quilts for years, so I’m glad we’ve achieved a real landmark result. Long may it continue 🙂

  21. gwenniesgardenworld says:

Congratulations !!But I’m not surprised, it is a beauty !!! And you are an angel yourself doing this for charity :D.

    • katechiconi says:

No, a little devil in hope of redemption! But this is now my work in life, so I need to do a good job!

      • gwenniesgardenworld says:

And you DO ! Have you ever thought of writing a book about how to quilt ?You do not need a publisher anymore, you can do it all by yourself, even if you just want one book or 10. (my husband is a writer)

      • katechiconi says:

No, I’ve never thought of it… There are so MANY quilting books out there, and I don’t believe I have anything new or original enough to say to give me a point of difference from all the others. My blog is enough for me.

  22. Moira says:

Wonderful news. And a fitting end to the process of getting this quilt made. I’m interested in hearing more about the “nude lunch’ and of course seeing what you come up with for it.

    • katechiconi says:

Yes, it was a good result. The Nude Lunch is now a landmark, annual event here, and if you click on the link in the post, it’ll take you to the website and what it’s all about. I’ll have to wait and find out if they’ll let me carry on with the punning titles or if I need to get ‘serious’!

  23. Oh, wonderful! H-m-m-m, a nude lunch?

  24. KerryCan says:

Well, I, for one, think the quilt was worth 5 times the amount of money raised! Still, I’m happy it was well-received and that it’s getting such an appreciative home. You, and the others, did an amazing thing . . .

  25. What a brilliant outcome. Please do share links to any media stories that appear… especially if the quilt features prominently. Well done you (again).

  26. rutigt says:

The quilt was worth all that money!
