Once again, it’s the day my friend Gun in Sweden and I host ScrapHappy, a day for showing something made from scraps.
This month, I’ve had a bit of a rummage in my surprisingly large box of brown scraps. I say surprising because brown is probably one of my least favourite colours to quilt with. Most of the scraps date from the time I made a Tree of Life quilt for my brother. The tree itself was made up of strip-pieced multiple brown fabrics, hence the generous array now at my disposal. I still haven’t made much of a dent in the brown scraps!
For the second block, I’ve made something from my neutrals box, picking out black, white and grey to go with the other strong colours I’ve already used.
After this, it’ll be time to start again, but this time using the paler, less saturated scraps for contrasting lighter blocks.
ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps – no new fabrics. It can be a random or formal quilt block, a pillow or pincushion, a bag or hat, a collage or rag rug. Anything made of scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? You don’t have to worry about a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link.

I love both color palettes! I don’t mind the brown. It reminds me of Autumn 🙂
I don’t mind this block at all! I’ve carefully chosen the golden brown/amber shades to keep it vibrant, rather than sad sludgy shades. It goes well with the strong colours in the other blocks I’ve made so far. And when it comes time to do the lighter version in the next round, I’ve got plenty of pretty coffee/beige/dark cream scraps. All good!

Its incredibel how lovely each block looks from just tiny scraps. A real inspiration.
And some of those scraps were really tiny! They’re easy to make too, just grab a few bits and start sewing till it’s the right size!

They work well with the other ScrapHappy blocks, so even though I’m not dead keen on the brown, it’s all good.
you’ll just need to make a few more brown blocks to add, and from what you say, you have heaps of brown.
I expect there will be a few more before this particular ScrapHappy variant is done!
Both of these are great! These Browns are very rich. I’m like you not so keen on autumn color combos, yet during my clean out I realized that I have tons of yellow, orange, rust and brown….not sure how I did that? 😄 When you finish your color work, it will be so much fun to see how this all ends up…looking forward to it
I’m going to keep on working through the colours till I run out or simply can’t make a decent block from what’s left. I think I’ll be running out of pink first!

Your blocks are so great! It´s the same for me, brown isn´t my favorite color, but some how I seam to have a lot of it 🙂
I think the trick is to use the nice golden brown pieces. I won’t feel too guilty about throwing out the nasty shades 😉

I’m continually amazed at the number of scraps I have in colors I don’t particularly enjoy using. How does that happen?! Your blocks are lovely; well done you!
Maybe the trick is to make a whole load of blocks out of those colours, and then donate them! Someone will love them and use them…
I have trouble with brown also…I don’t like to wear it, have trouble using it in things…
I like specific shades of brown to wear: chocolate, pale tan, but on the whole it’s not a colour I want to sew with much…

Now those are some wild and fun blocks! I personally like the gray color scheme. You could add a few pieces of orange and red or yellow or teal for a fun interest element. But really, you can’t go wrong with either. They are SCRAPTASTIC!
I’m worried that if I start bringing in other colours, I won’t be able to stop 🙂 Next month I’ll start over, but using the paler shades from each colour box.
I am not a frequent user of brown fabrics either, but I really love how those scraps look together. Gorgeously earthy.
