Cathy’s quilt #2

I haven’t managed to come up with a name for this one yet…

cathys-quilt-1-3You all know how much I love to name quilts; it seems to help me with ideas and impetus. This one’s got me a bit stumped. Something to do with the colour? Teals, aquas, blue-greens, water and air colours… The design? Basket-weave, stars, chequerboard, flower baskets… The future owner? The lovely Cathy, my sister-in-law, hard-working education student and mother, with a heart of gold.

I have three more blocks done. I realised about 5 minutes into the second one that I’d mucked up the first one I showed. So I’m saving that for a cushion cover unless I run out of fabrics, in which case I’ll have to do a huge frog and unpick the entire thing. Here are three new basket-weave/star blocks and the central flower basket appliqué block. I’m waiting to do the 8 inch chequer-board blocks round this till I see how much fabric I have left from the 16 inch outer blocks.

If anyone out there has a stroke of genius for the name, do please share it. I don’t promise to use any suggestions, but you never know, you might end up giving me the inspiration I need 🙂

And Cathy, if you have a name for this quilt, I want to know!

POSTSCRIPT:  Many thanks to Kate of Manic Mumdays, who provided the future name for this quilt. I give you Sea Glass!

“Something In Between” ? Because, you know, “blue and green should never be seen …” 🙂
    Or something about Sea Glass?

I don’t think I can top ‘Sea Glass’ and, now I’ve heard it, nothing else will come into my mind anyway.

The baskets are cute. Cathys quilt is going to be exquisite

Love the basket block and how you made them. Definitely remembering how you did it! And love the name Sea Glass as well.

Glad you’ve found it helpful 🙂 I just followed the method I’ve used on the Hatbox quilts, with tear-away stabiliser behind, the pieces basted through all the layers before stitching down, and cutting away the excess behind at the end.

  5. Sea Glass is lovely. Or Blue Lagoon?

I was thinking Tropical Garden, but Sea Glass grabbed my attention. You are so creative, Kate, can’t wait to see how this turns out!

To give an impression of how it’ll end up, I’d need to make a handful of chequerboard blocks to put in place around the central medallion, but I want to hold off on those till I assess the fabric situation. I carry quite a clear picture of the finished thing round in my head!

I like Sea Glass, too! I was thinking before I read that how much it reminds me of rain, makes me feel nostalgic, so I had thought of Mizzling or Tippling. They are both wonderful! The quilt pieces not the names, I vote for Sean Glass ♡

It’s a pretty name and those are pretty colours to go with it. I will have a lot more to show soon – the blocks go together quite quickly, even though they are big.

Hi it’s the sister in law in question and I actually like Sea Glass it reminds me of pieces of sea glass u can find and I love going for a walk on the beach, it’s my happy place I truely relax when I’m there.

    • katechiconi says:

Phew! Glad you like the name, because I’m using that name in my head already… I know exactly what you mean about the beach being a happy place. I’ll be posting an update in the next couple of days, and I’m loving how it’s coming along, hope you will too xxx

  12. Sea Glass is the perfect name!

Meanwhile, I was thinking of Baskets for Cathy, Beach Baskets, and other iterations on that theme. Mostly because the baskets are going to be the focal point of the quilt as I understand it. Ya gotta do what works for you though!
