A mixed bag

It has been a trying few days.

We discovered, after receiving an astronomical power bill, that our solar array wasn’t working, and hasn’t been for some time. As a result of paying to get it fixed and paying said astronomical bill, we’ve had to cancel a planned trip to Melbourne in June. Very disappointing; I’d hoped to catch up with friends and family, do a bit of shopping, show the Husband where I used to live, that sort of thing. It’s not really a substitute, but to make up to ourselves for missing out on Melbourne, we’re going up to Cairns on the bike for 4 days of zooming around the hills, eating good food and catching some amazing scenery. That’ll be at the end of May, and I’m looking forward to it a great deal, especially now that the weather’s a bit more moderate.

I’ve been a bit under the weather recently, and am waiting for blood test results, and my annual flu shot is making me feel a bit yuck too, a bit shivery and headachy.

I’ve managed three rows of red hexie quilting in the last 3 days, which is pretty poor progress — I should be able to get three rows a day done at the very least. I’m hoping to feel better and have more time tomorrow. At this rate, I definitely won’t have time to quilt the filler hexies too. It’s always the way, isn’t it: lots to do in limited time, and events conspire to reduce your time even more!

We have a few more plans in the backyard, including three raised beds for vegetables, down the side of the house and near the water supply so irrigation won’t be a problem. The Husband is going to mark out and chip out the base for the chook house in the next day or so, so Chookonia is a few steps closer too.

Right, time to get tucked up in bed and try to sleep myself well again.

  1. Maybe you need to put your feet up for a bit? with a good book and a nice cup of whatever you like to drink. I do hope you feel better soon. x

sorry to hear about the bill and change of holiday plans.
I’m waiting, in trepidation, for the end of the year and our first water bill. Was told, when we moved in in December, that once they know our yearly consumption, they’ll be able to work out an average monthly debit for 2016 but for this year, it will be a big surprise around Christmas. Water is more expensive here than in our previous home, so I’m trying to put money to one side . . . but I am dreading it.

Utilities are always a worry… We were so glad to have the solar, but it’s turned around and bitten us on the bum. We won’t be leaving it unsupervised for so long again…

Paying the utility bill was always my least favourite card to draw in monopoly! Sorry about your missed holiday and hope you feel back to your usual self asap. x

  4. I’m sorry you’re having a rough time, and hope that the worst is behind you. You take care of yourself, and don’t try to do too much.
    love,

I empathize your being under the weather. Sure hope you get to feeling better soon – or better yet, sooner! At least you were able to swap out the Melbourne trip for something else fun. I assume that trip will involve shorter stints on the bike. ;- )

Melbourne would have required 4 hours on a plane, Cairns is about 8 hours on the bike! A different kind of holiday, but fun nonetheless, and we’ll be able to catch up with a different set of friends. Thanks for your good wishes, I’m hoping for a simple solution to the problems!

  7. sorry to hear about your unexpected expenses ! and get well soon ! ( i broke my right wrist and i am out for at least 6 weeks in the busiest garden season !!)

  8. I’m so sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well. Getting a rotten unexpected bill like that doesn’t help matters. Here’s hoping everything is much brighter on the horizon. Avis x

Feeling somewhat better now that the side effects of the flu shot have passed. The bill, well, these things happen, and at least we caught it sooner rather than later.

  9. I hope you feel better soon!

Feeling more the thing already, to the extent I spent most of the day working outside in the back yard. Such luxury a luxury to have reasonable temperatures at last…

Oh dear, hope you are feeling better, on all fronts!

I’m pleased all was not lost and you’ll be able to have a break, if not the one that was planned. Power bills can be a mystery. After 3 years in this apartment due to the need to step up security from our nonchalant open door practices, with trepidation we began using the air-conditioner of a night. Only a $30 increase in the bill! But with winter we’ll scale it back as warming is more expensive. We’ve just bought new, bigger fridge-freezer for TA, and I’ve left it on low, and we’ll be removing the bar fridge next visit but I’ll be holding my breath for the bill.
Hopefully good food, rest and gardening is seeing you feeling better 🙂

We’ve found that maintaining the cool temperature is cheaper than turning it off and on. That said, we’ve finally reached temperatures where we don’t need the aircon on 24-7. Hopefully we’ll be back to normal at the next bill. Missing out on Melbourne is sad, but it’s not going anywhere and will still be there another time.

I hope you’re feeling better, and had a great bike trip.
