Words under Pressure #18

For many, perhaps most of you out there reading this blog, Spring is coming, a welcome relief from arduous weather conditions and the start of gentler things. For me, Autumn is on the way, offering its own relief as the weather moderates, cyclone season passes, and cool mornings remind me of my childhood.

Do you know that rush
Of powerful, heady happiness
You get on mornings in Spring,
When your blood is green?

Do you know the singing
That lifts the top of your head,
The scent of sunlight,
Prompting unreasonable joy?

Do you feel the miracle
Of daybreak, after good sleep,
And your skin fits –
Though your heart is the size of the world?

I am older now, but I still long
To run like the child I was
In the hill’s blowing grass,
Clean, whole and hopeful.

I hope Spring comes soon for you all…

  1. Kate, that is a wonderfully happy poem. It really gave me a lift on this cold, grey gloomy March day.

I’m glad to have infused a bit of cheer into a cold dark morning, Viv! I find early morning in spring and summer the most exhilarating and invigorating still, even after all these years.

Kate, what a lovely – and accurate – description of a spring morning! It’s pretty gloomy around here this morning too so your poem was a delightful reminder of prettier mornings. 🙂

Thank you for that! Days are definitely lengthening here in UK. Since childhood I have always thought of Australia being completly different in season. Xx

    • katechiconi says:

It is, completely the other way around. July and August in southern Australia are definitely woolly weather, and Christmas is at the hottest time of year. It was such a revelation to me when I arrived, to find that my January birthday was now in the height of summer instead of the dreariest, darkest time of year!

What a beautiful entreaty to Spring, so evocative, it’s sure to be heard and heeded.
For myself the Autumnal turn the weather has taken is pleasant. I’m hoping you’re far enough south now to enjoy it as well 🙂

We arrived a couple of hours ago, and by the time we got up the mountain we were almost shivering in our hot weather bike gear, carefully designed to let cool air flow through it… I think with a jumper underneath it up here, we should be fine, and we’ll certainly sleep well tonight!

Who would have thought roaring about on a bike and writing poetry went hand in hand? A lovely poem but alas, even after a good night’s sleep, my skin doesn’t seem to fit like it used to 😉

    • katechiconi says:

Perhaps you should view it as ‘etre bien dans sa peau’ instead of, like me, regretting my resemblance to a shar pei dog in the mirror of a morning… 😉

  6. Here, autumn feels like spring. Rain and cooler weather means greenery and fresh growth after the scorching heat of summer.

  7. Nanette says:

Good to know you arrived in one piece, you must’ve made good time if you were blogging by 5.30….or 6.30 if your blogging apparatus in on Qland time. You’re words are very lyrical and pretty 🙂

    • katechiconi says:

That was posted at 5.30 of the morning we saw you, not this morning! We had to make an early start to get through the BrisVegas traffic. And thank you for the kind words!

Spring is here, but they say it´s gonna snow this coming weekend 😦 I hope they are wrong 🙂 Have a nice vacation whereever you are!!!!

Me too! We are visiting much further south than we live, and are finding it quite cold at night, under 20C! Of course, this only makes sense if you understand we’re below the equator…

I would like to run like a child again also…the carefree happiness of youth!

  10. This poem is fresh and exuberant as spring itself.

    • katechiconi says:

Thank you! I still feel that way in my head, even if my body is stiff, sore and lurching rather than running these days. But I still feel like singing on fresh spring mornings, with a heart full of thankfulness.
