The pattern has been chosen.
I’m talking about the garment I’m going to make from Patsy A. I took a couple of hours this morning browsing through pattern books to find a candidate worthy of the cloth it will be cut from, and one which used the cloth I have. There were plenty I liked which needed 3 or 4 metres, but something interesting which would showcase the fabric and be comfortable, and most of all, me, was harder to find. It’s a combination of crisp and floaty, and I’m naming it the Swoopy Shirt, because of the hemline. If it works well, I can see myself duplicating it endlessly…
It’s from Butterick, B5786. I’m making the longest version, but I’m changing the sleeves from full length to a ¾ length for comfort’s sake. I may also change the closure on the cuffs to two buttonholes to take a cufflink, also for comfort and coolness. Buttonholes I can do (just as well, there are 10 on this shirt), but I don’t want to end up not wearing it because it’s too, well… buttoned up for the climate.
I’m also thinking about using a variety of buttons to match the pretty pastel colours in the fabric: grey, pale blue, pale pink, pale yellow and raspberry. Just grey seems a bit dull…. What do you think?
I’ve pressed and cut out the tissue pattern. That’s all I can take today; it’s extremely hot and humid, not a day to be spending any time adjacent to a steam iron. I still need to press the fabric and clear the dining table in preparation for cutting out, but tomorrow is baking day for the coffee shop, and I shall be enduring the heat of the kitchen for the better part of the morning. Maybe I’ll have cooled down enough by the afternoon to carry on!
Time to go and stitch some more hexies together. I’ll have some of that to show soon…

I love loose… swoopy… things, so I think this is a great idea for the lovely Patsy I’m very pleased as well despite the humidity you are browsing and pottering, and not dealing with the fall-out of extreme weather. Humid here as well with rain threatening, even wandering the farmers markets was a little warm but then I repotted plants & cleaned the balcony after which I retreated to the shower & air con!
I think it’s going to be nice because the lawn is so light and floaty, but not at all transparent, so you have plenty of coverage which is also nice and cool. We’re hovering around 33C with a grey overcast sky and massive humidity. Lovely… 😦 But as you say, better than post cyclone clean-up!
Decisions, decisions. You will be very fashionable, as well as cool!
Not as important as it used to be, that, but coolness, yes, that’s critical. I’m looking forward to working with the fabric, it should sew up and press beautifully.
First of all, I’m so glad you are unscathed and undamaged in the Land of Chiconia. I did worry.
Secondly, what a lovely pattern to make use of your gorgeous fabric. As for the buttons, I think we should see the finished garment before putting in our twopenceworth about the different colours – we don’t have to commit ourselves at this stage do we?
Thirdly, as you mentioned baking, I just wanted to tell you I made your gold plated bird seed bars and they truly are delicious. We’re making another batch this weekend so my daughter can take some in to college for her her birthday on Tuesday to share with a few ‘special’ people only. My blender, again, didn’t like the sticky stuff so I broke out my trusty Magimix which made short work of it. Lidl has ‘American Week’ on at the moment so I have stocked up on large jars of crunchy peanut butter which should keep me going.
Goodness, you got round to it! I’m so glad you like the bars, they really are quite yummy and moreish, aren’t they. If you’re flush with peanut butter just now, you might consider trying the PNB cookies as well…? Tomorrow I’m making chocolate caramel shortbread as well as some more savoury items – would you like the recipe for that too?
Oops, I forgot to say that, flushed with success (and peanut butter) I made the cookies too. Very nice! Chocolate caramel shortbread eh? Sounds interesting.
That’s my girl! Yes, a sweet shortbread base, a thick caramel layer and then a thin dark chocolate layer on top. It’s the first time out for this recipe, I shall let you know how I get on…

Both of course… I am not really a fashion-conscious one… but I love such loosely hanging blouses/shirts out of patterned fabrics… (like yours and like this: https://knettycraft.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/130616_victoriapark-annett2.jpg )… I wonder what the shirt from your fabric will look like 🙂

that is a cool shirt and I think all different colours of buttons will be lovely !
I think it’ll have to wait until the front is ready so I can lay the buttons out and see how it looks…
I just bought some beautiful Liberty buttons from l’uccello in Melbourne. It might be worth asking them about buttons.
I shall look around carefully when the time comes… It’s a while off; this shirt is going to be very carefully assembled and finished off inside.
Mis-read the title of this post and thought it said swoopy skirt so was a little surprise when I saw a picture of a shirt. Then I realised my mistake. Opps!
How about the majority of the buttons in grey with just a couple in co-ordinating colours?
That’s the sort of thing I was thinking. My latest thought, however, is self covered buttons so they disappear completely!
