The Husband of Chiconia has finally received his birthday present. Only 4 days late, but better late than never.
He wanted a tablet, so we went shopping, and the plaything of choice was the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1. It’s elegant, small and moderately easy to use. He’s a Windows fan, preferring to leave all things Apple to me.
Now, of course, he needs a cover, especially as he’ll be wanting to take it away on bike trips. And he thought what I’d done for my MacBook was fairly nifty. I went poking around in the stash for something man-friendly, or fairly – it’s quite loud, but he’ll never lose it and it’s unique…
I think this selection plays nicely with my cover, too. His is more thickly padded than mine, because even though we have a screen protector film on it, the screen’s a bit more vulnerable than the one on my weeny laptop. The front panel of the cover has a sheet of heavy duty vinyl inside it too, covered with batting. Using vinyl rather than board means it will still be washable. And there’s a little pouch for the charging plug and cable.
He’ll probably get another heavy duty case at some stage, with an integrated Bluetooth keyboard, but for minimal-luggage travel, this little envelope will be the business.
It’s not often I get to sew something nice for the Husband….

I was nervous in case he thought they were too ‘loud’ but he likes them! And it’s very easy to find the case because the fabric stands out well, which is important in our untidy house…
And it is really nice. Now I have to make a cover for Jock’s new i-pad – which his grand-daughter is going to teach him how to use next week.
Isn’t it nice how all this technology gives us a reason to make things by hand? I think he’ll enjoy the iPad, it’s quite intuitive and fun to use.

You really need both, one for casual, lying-around-the-house use, and another for when you take it somewhere and need to protect it. The sheet of vinyl is a thick 20-gauge, and does a brilliant job of protecting the screen from sharp objects.

Thank you, that’s so kind! I’ve always felt that the over-abundance of electronic toys in our lives needs to be balanced with the crafted, considered, hand made and personalised. For me, it’s all about sewing!

No, definitely not! The thing I enjoyed most is that I got to make something for the Husband, something that rarely happens. Most of my sewing contributions for him involve repairing torn work clothes and reattaching buttons!
Funny you should say about having the chance to make the Lord of C something sewn. I’ve been thinking about making a ‘mannish’ quilt for Mr. T – as I seem to have made one for everyone else – and it would be appropriate as he has a flat where he stays 3 or 4 nights a week in the U.K.for work so it would be a piece of home for him as well as having a practical use. The fabric you have used reminded me and perhaps it will be the project after the current one. I’ll have to keep an eye out for a suitable pattern and fabrics.
I’m planning a work quilt for the Husband to put in the truck for when he’s on nights and needs a nap. I was going to make it out of his recycled work clothes, navy drill and orange high-vis cotton with reflective strips here and there and company logos dotted around! Perhaps a quieter colour scheme for Mr T? I’ve always liked the black/white/grey/bright green combo, it’s fresh but also masculine. I’ll look forward to seeing what you come up with.
My hubby tries to discourage me from sewing for him. I understand from his mutterings that he is still traumatised by a hand-made jumper with uneven sleeves from another female relative.
Luckily, the Husband of Chiconia has not been similarly traumatised. And I have to do a lot of sewing up his work clothes, so he’s quite happy to have rips and tears fixed. This was just something a bit nicer!
