Countdown to the move: 21 days to go

Screen shot 2014-09-03 at 4.31.01 PMThis is what we did today.

The trailer is full of boxes of books. That’s the third trailer full. The back of the ute is full of book cases.

My home is slowly unravelling around me, like a piece of knitting where the cat has got away with the ball of yarn.

Everything we can manage to cram in is being packed into a storage unit on the way to the new house. I’d like to empty the house room by room, but it never works that way… there’s always something you need to keep in several rooms. But I’m going to try. Envisage us in the last few days sleeping on the floor in the living room, using one cup, plate, fork, knife and spoon each – and all because I went a little bonkers with the packing!

Time to go and put my feet up for a little…

Time to get a Kindle?? 🙂

Got one! It’s the only reason I consented to pack all those books this early in the process. I have kept about 3 books back from packing, which will go into the boxes containing all my sewing stuff (and there will be plenty of those…).

I’m thinking of putting a Kindle on my Christmas list this year. I’ve always resisted before because I love the look and feel of books. However, space is becoming an issue even though I have plenty of it, and we bought our eldest a Paperwhite for Christmas and I love that you can read it in the sun and change or enlarge the font plus the backlight would be good as I read in bed and won’t have to keep the bedside lamp on. I think I will just keep my ‘classics’ and get other reading books as e-books in future. However, sewing books and other craft books I will keep buying as ‘real’ books because, for fabric and yarn porn, I need big pictures and pages to turn.

I have to say, we both love the Kindle. Wonderful for travelling, the charge lasts for ages, and you get e-books instantaneously. I still buy ‘real’ books, but have been known to buy the e-book as well once it gets a bit cheaper…. And as you say, for picture books, you need the real thing!

  2. Been there, done that, wearing the T shirt….

    Just don’t pack the kettle yet . . .

You’re doing well. So, once in storage, you will be doing the reverse at the new house?

Pretty much! It makes the process of moving yourself a lot more manageable, and it’s amazing how much you can fit into a 3 x 4m storage unit. Of course, the actual day of the move will still be chaos, but at least we won’t be utterly exhausted.

  5. well that is going fast !!! I thought it would take month’s before you could move !! succes !! it will all be worth it in the end…..

I found using a storage unit worked really well. Books are heavy aren’t they? Great amassing loads on the shelf but my friends all groan when I say I’m moving. Keep up the good work.

Everything enjoyable in life seems to be heavy… Fabric, books, bottles, comfortable furniture, gardening tools, the lot. I’ve never asked friends to help move, on the basis that it’s my stuff, my call, but I’m sure they’d groan if faced with packing and shifting this house! Another trailer filled, and the spare room is now empty except for pictures leaning against the wall…
