Words under Pressure #3

The River

On the bridge at night,
The moon huge, stars brilliant;
Look down the great river
At the chain of lights.

History linking hands on either bank.
The fiery water throws back
Earth and heaven in pageant.
Electricity rejoices with the stars.

The wind blows cool across it.
A duck calls at water’s edge.
In daylight, electricity pales.
Nature conquers, at the last.
